The unit has over 50 staff working across both CBeebies and CBBC.
The CBBC and CBeebies studios operate up to 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year producing junctions between programmes – both live as well as recorded. In addition, the CBeebies team makes content for BBC Worldwide (CBeebies territories – Africa, Asia, Poland, South America) plus the Bedtime Stories which are recorded in the studio and occasionally on location. The Design team works mainly at the Children’s Production Workshop based at Flix in Salford Quays, but may include location shoots.
We are looking for a dynamic and flexible Design Assistant to support the Art Director to work in the Presentation design team.
Role Responsibility
The role of the Design Assistant is to contribute to the creativity needed in designing and creating props, costumes and set dressings in a variety of materials for Presentation in line with the style of the channels in a safe manner, utilising your knowledge of appropriate tools and safe working practices. You’ll also assist with the sourcing of props and costumes and be responsible for the maintenance of regularly used props as well as ensuring the working environment remains tidy and safe. You’ll work in the studio dressing the set, and props when required and contribute to brainstorms to support content ideas. Working towards tight deadlines, you’ll contribute to the smooth running of daily rehearsals, RX and/or live TX in collaboration with the wider production teams.
Daily responsibilities will include:
• To report to the Art Director, Presentation, and always ensure studios and prop areas are prepared as required – action props, set dressing, costumes.

• Occasionally to assist in the loading and unloading of additional flats and all studio or location related equipment with other members of the design team.
• Keep accurate photographic records of returning design set ups and any other relevant information.
• Provide regular updates to the Art Director, alerting them to potential problems at the earliest possible stage.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for individuals with graduate level in art and design and/or experience working in television or theatre with evidence of set dressing, prop making and design skills.
Individuals need to be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of the content, style and tone of both CBBC and CBeebies. Excellent communication and organisation skills are vital for the individual selected for the post, so they are able to work effectively within the design team, and wider Production teams.
They’ll possess the ability to work with creative and technical colleagues and performers as well as the ability to work under pressure towards tight deadlines. Individuals should also have lifting and handling experience.
