Job Introduction
This role works within the Content Commissioning division in the BBC.
Our team of Commissioning Editors commission a wide range of much-loved programmes each year across all our channels. This role is critical to delivering our strategy; responsible for both generating and developing bold ground-breaking ideas and working with both in-House Production and the Independent Sector to commission content based on a deep understanding of audience needs and the genre. We are looking for a Commissioning Editor keen to both commission & acquire content & programming for the Documentary genre.
Role Responsibility
In this new role you will be responsible for both the commissioning of the award-winning Storyville strand & the acquisition of factual programming for the BBC. You will have dual responsibility for the generation of & the development of creative ideas for commissioned documentaries, as well as the ability to identify & purchase programming from both a global and local acquisitions market.
On a day to day basis you will be working closely with the Commissioning & Channel Controllers, ensuring that your priorities and editorial strategy are aligned. Youll also inspire and engage in-house and independent producers by articulating your editorial priorities, and work with them to create and develop ideas that meet our audiences needs. By providing creative leadership to the development process, youll encourage risk-taking and innovation, whilst maintaining expertise in your genre to identify trends and opportunities for outstanding content.
Youll balance your previous editorial experience with ensuring programmes are quality compliant and that the financial slate you are accountable for is delivered successfully, and that commissions & acquisitions demonstrate value for money, quality and originality.
The Ideal Candidate
As the ideal candidate you have highly demonstrable, industry experience in factual documentary programme-making &/or commissioning. You understand and are aware of the BBCs commissioning & acquisitions priorities and can demonstrate a track record of producing successful content based on a thorough understanding of genre and audience needs. The role will require excellent editorial judgment, proven contacts with film makers, other broadcasters and external partners.
The Commissioning Editor will also require a strong sense of the domestic & the international documentary film-making market. You will have prior experience of identifying, acquiring and commissioning distinctive films that resonate for specific UK audiences & channels. You will therefore have a clear understanding of how to maximise the opportunities to be gained through tailoring rights & co-production models.
You will have extensive experience in spotting and developing on screen talent, with a breadth and depth of contacts amongst programme-makers that will contribute to your success in this role.
As a strong communicator you will be able to engage and inspire, particularly when presenting and speaking in public. Finally, youll be a leader, both creatively but also an ambassador of the BBC.
This is a fantastic opportunity to work for an organisation that is diverse, challenging and rewarding with the opportunity to shape the future of public service broadcasting.
