South Carolina Watchdog Coach
USA TODAY NETWORK is one of the top 20 digital companies in the country, sharing the list with Google, Facebook, and Amazon. And we have over 100 million unique visitors a month, which is more than Buzzfeed, Yahoo News, and Huffington Post. Because our team consists of over 110 local properties with USA TODAY at the helm, you’ll have the luxury of living in a community you love while making a national impact.
The USA Today Network South Carolina region is looking for a skilled watchdog coach who can lead a team of seven reporters to uncover important stories that affect people in the Upstate and throughout South Carolina.
Our experienced watchdog team spans two newsrooms and is connected to the cities and state they serve. They deserve a strong coach to help them turn their already excellent work into something special. This coach will build teams across the newsrooms to produce quality watchdog journalism that will resonate among our readers and across the country.
We want a coach who can find unique ways to tell stories that will help us to grow a digital audience. The watchdog coach reports directly to the South Carolina regional news director.
Among the qualifications we’re seeking:
• A college degree and at least five years in a newsroom environment.
• Experience reporting and editing solid watchdog journalism that digs deep into issues and holds leaders accountable, captures readers’ attention and spurs them to action.
• Digital acumen. We are a digital-first newsroom and our watchdog journalism needs to reflect that mindset, with an emphasis on multimedia storytelling and compelling video presentation.
• A familiarity with databases and data journalism is a plus.
The USA Today Network South Carolina region is a single news organization spanning two newsrooms – The Greenville News and the Anderson Independent Mail – to create one of the largest teams of journalists in the Upstate of South Carolina. This coach will split time between the two newsrooms and will be a leader in both newsrooms.
Greenville and Anderson, just 30 miles apart, are in the picturesque Upstate of South Carolina just 30 minutes away from the Blue Ridge Mountains and only hours away from the Atlantic Coast. Greenville is frequently listed as one of the best places in the country to live, and has a downtown that is considered a gem of the Southeast. Anderson is a growing county that in some ways depends on Greenville and in others strives to be independent of its larger neighbor. Both cities are ripe for quality watchdog journalism. Our team is ready to dig in.
