Qualifications
EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND KNOWLEDGE:
• Must be currently enrolled in a four-year college or university and working on a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or other related discipline
• Completion of coursework with an editorial component is a plus.
• Formal employment as a copyeditor, such as at a university newspaper, is a plus.
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Basic knowledge of industry-standard style and usage guides (e.g., The Chicago Manual of Style, The Gregg Reference Manual, Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Garner’s Modern American Usage, etc.)
• Knowledge of rules surrounding grammar, punctuation, spelling, diction, syntax, and other elements of language
• Some experience with PDF mark-up, standard proofreaders’ marks, and Google docs/sheets
• Facility with technology
• Demonstrated capacity to learn
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interns will be assigned mentors and will shadow current staff and receive instruction in the following: copyediting, proofreading, project management, scheduling, educational assessment publishing, and publishing industry protocols and standards
• Complete copyediting training assignments; self-assess learning
• Communicate effectively and act on instructions and training appropriately
• Operate effectively both within department and across departments
• Perform other duties as assigned
• Work onsite and maintain a steady schedule; be punctual; take feedback well; behave professionally in an office environment
