Investigative data reporter
The Courier-Journal, part of the USA Today Network, is looking for an investigative reporter who enjoys digging into data to tell ambitious stories that uncover wrong-doing and hold government accountable. Applicants must know how to gather and analyze data and translate it into compelling content on a variety of digital platforms. Our ideal candidate will have a proven track record of producing high-impact watchdog/investigative journalism and strong data analysis skills. This reporter will be a key member of our investigative team and will work with other reporters and editors to conceive stories and help shape our reporting.
Typical job duties/requirements:
• Relentless reporter who instinctively seeks documentation and requests public records
• Compulsive about fairness and accuracy
• Familiar with statistics and use of query analysis software such as SQL, R or Python.
• Familiar with any software or visualization tools the newsroom has purchased, subscribes to or uses frequently such as Mapbox, Carto DB, Microsoft Access, HighCharts, etc.
• Demonstrated experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript
• Experience with open source libraries in JavaScript such as D3.js and Leaflet.
• Experience and expertise negotiating for data
• An appreciation and willingness to tell data stories in alternative, visually compelling ways
• Consistently write with clarity and impact
• Ability to work collectively and effectively in a team environment
• Think critically and creatively to solve problems
