Description
PURPOSE
The purpose of the role is development and implementation of Pearson UK strategic marketing plan. The Vice President of Marketing will contribute to market share gain and profitability by focusing on brand positioning, communication strategy, customer research, customer experience, lead generation, sales support, website, media outreach, and digital marketing. The Vice President of Marketing will create and execute all marketing strategies and campaigns, ultimately improving marketing’s direct connection to business results, underpinning UK revenues, with the optimal use of a multi-million pound marketing budget.
This is a leadership role which will involve requiring strong vision, leadership, and collaboration.
Reports to the SVP UK Schools.
MAIN ACCOUNTABILTIES
Strategy
• Provide strategic direction for Pearson UK Marketing and the Pearson Brands in the UK, and be the driver of commercial success achieved through effective marketing
• Develop a solid understanding, for self and within the team, of our customers, and perpetuate a culture where everything is done by starting from customer insights, and by aiming to maximise the customer experience
• Develop, plan and lead all aspects of the marketing strategy based on market trending, competitive analysis, customer profiles and targeting tactics in order to achieve Pearson UK strategic short and long-term sales growth, market share and revenue profitability goals, across all markets.
• Monitor and evaluate business performance and make adjustments to Marketing and eCommerce efforts in order to achieve desired business results.
• With business leads ensure Pearson UK product/service offerings remain competitive, complete and are delivered in a timely manner.
• With business and sales leads Grow the demand for Pearson UK products/services, identify key growth areas and evaluate business opportunities
• Position our products with compelling messages that resonate with customers with a focus on generating leads and driving eCommerce sales, whilst supporting and partnering with the Sales teams to deliver on sales targets.
• Collaborate with Sales and Product Management teams to ensure plans are well-integrated and aligned across the UK
• Collaborate more broadly with the Corporate Affairs team to define and implement Brand and PR strategies
Innovation and Marketing Transformation
• Drive marketing transformation across the marketing organisation
• Inject best practice, and draw upon own network to bring in new ideas, ways of working, processes and tools, and create a culture of constant learning
• Identify business and customer insights contributing to constant optimisation of efforts to maximise ROI
• Keep the marketing organisational structure aligned to the delivery of strategic goals
Research and Insights
• Utilize critical market and competitive research to inform positioning and define target market.
• Monitor and analyse market and competitor activity, recommending the right course of action for Pearson UK.
• Collaborate with the Strategy and Economics team, the Regulatory team, Sales, Products and other customer facing teams to gather, analyse and triangulate key market and customer data to inform marketing strategies
• Constantly review and improve ways to gather, utilise and share insights
Execution
• Establish targeted customer value propositions and execute go-to-market strategies across all targeted market segments.
• Ensure timely and effective execution of the marketing programmes.
• Partner with sales throughout the sales processes (lead generation, nurturing leads, sales presentations, organic growth and client retention, etc.) with evolved marketing tools and programmes.
• Actively monitor marketing results, budgets and revenue forecasts to ensure achievement of goals and forecasts.
• Manage all aspects of marketing planning, budgeting, metrics and reporting, including delivering the annual marketing business plan and operating budget.
Establish and Maintain Effective Contact With Key Stakeholders
• Work with the Senior Leadership Team to develop appropriate internal stakeholder relationships across all business units.
• Present and report on marketing efforts to ensure activities are monitored, challenged and refined to deliver maximum value
• Work collaboratively with identified external stakeholders to influence and maximise business development potential.
• Contribute and attend national networks of influencers and stakeholders as agreed to support Pearson corporate networking.
• Establish and maintain effective communication channels with key staff in Pearson UK, Lines of Business, Corporate Affairs to facilitate the opportunity for enhanced connectivity to leverage competitive advantage.
Leadership
• Develop a high performing marketing team utilizing both internal and external (agency and contractor), best-in-class talent.
• Ensure that the Pearson UK Leadership Team is provided with the correct information and support to enable them to carry out their roles effectively.
• Coach and mentor senior managers to maximise their performance and potential and facilitate the team as a whole to develop synergy and best practice.
• Put in place training programmes to improve skills within the team in line with the requirements of the strategy
• Develop and motivate staff through appropriate levels of mentoring, coaching and monitoring to shape culture, behaviours and competences to support business objectives.
• Ensure the team is adequately resourced to deliver its commitments
Budgetary responsibilities
• Establish and implement systems to monitor performance against business targets.
• Perform analysis of marketing activities to help optimise budget utilisation, by removing activities that don’t work, and focusing on those that do
• Participate in forecasting plan revenues and re-forecasts and take responsibility for meeting these targets
• Propose budget requirements to achieve objectives and manage to budget and flag and discuss any significant variances or new requirements.
REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
This is a broad senior marketing leadership role. The ideal candidate will have held a CMO or VP Marketing role previously and have cross-industry marketing experience across Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Consumer (B2C). An understanding of Marketing best practice, as well as broad Marketing industry contacts and the ability to drive positive change are essential.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate experience in:
• Solid digital and general marketing background with previous experience in a similar role.
• Evidence of a successful track record in a strategic marketing role.
• Experience of having developed and implemented successful sales and marketing strategy through offline and digital media.
• Reputation for high quality effective and innovative Marketing.
• Experience of delivering marketing transformation both digital and offline with relentless focus on ROI.
• Proven track record of achieving/ exceeding targets.
• Ability to contribute strategically to a business or organisation at a senior management level.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills and comfortable working in a matrix organisation.
• High professional integrity.

• Experience of managing a large team ideally in Marketing.
• Strong leadership skills with proven track record in managing organisational performance and change.

Qualifications
Essential:
• Proven experience, in a strategic marketing/strategy /commercial leadership role, with direct responsibility for delivering exceptional marketing strategy
• Educated to degree level or equivalent,
• CIM qualified
• Experience of operating a multi-channel B2B and B2C environments
• Experience of product and service marketing
• Proven experience to operate at a senior leadership role
• Strategic planning and delivery leadership
• Management and leadership at a senior level

Desirable:
• Demonstrable success of marketing in UK education and training markets

This role can be based from either our London or Oxford office, but your time will be spent across both Locations.
