The Marketing Manager, Data Products & Services will lead on marketing strategy and implementation to support Springer Nature’s Open Research Group (ORG) in becoming the industry leader in Open Data (OD) and Research Data Services (RDS).
Working closely with Editorial, Publishing, Business Operations, Subject Experts and Heads of Marketing, this role will support Scientific Data as the leading open data journal, and bring to market and grow uptake and revenue on new data products and services. Their support for marketing and thought leadership will enable Springer Nature to continue to strongly advocate OD and to develop useful author- and editor- focused RDS.
This role is pivotal to the Outreach & Development team and to ORG marketing as whole, establishing a new function. Passionate about data, insight, analytics and our customers, it requires the ability to communicate vision, excellent planning and strategic skills, organisational and reporting skills, a creative approach to marketing, a focus on results and ROI , and strong people skills to work collaboratively with senior internal and external stakeholders.
The role is office based but may include occasional travel to conferences or other company locations.
Responsibilities:
Delivering plans and strategies:
• Lead the OD marketing function and strategy with the Head of Marketing, Outreach & Development
• Own Scientific Data journal marketing including the planning, deployment and reporting of all campaigns, to grow submissions and readership and have an awareness of the wider ORG portfolios and how the brands position amongst one another
• Develop and implement go to market strategies and plans for new data products and services
• Increase awareness of RDS and OD through multiple marketing channels; promote a greater awareness and recognition for data citation, management, reuse and sharing
• Establish and advocate a clear consistent message on OD and research data management through online and offline marketing, thought leadership and events, working closely with publishing and communications
• Ensure brand & thought leadership and clear messaging and customer-centric copy through all marketing channels (globally)
• Support business development through research, data analysis and production of presentations and collateral for pitches and use by sales teams
• Lead in the creation of a dedicated site to promote OD, RDS and resources by research community and highly relevant audiences through promotion, sponsorship and attendance at events
• Work with the Marketing Digital & Operations team to pilot new digital approaches & embed in existing marketing plans
• Represent ORG marketing at external events, and internally at project team meetings, internal senior management meetings and the Open Research division internally and externally
Focusing on data and customer/market insight
• Play an integral role in the provision of a comprehensive research data management portal for promoting resources, services, information and community interaction
• Develop an understanding of the potential market: identifying the key growth areas, geographies, scope of the funding landscape, movement and actions of our competitors, in collaboration with the Market Intelligence, Strategic Analysis, Research & Development and other marketing teams
• Synthesise collected market data and the priorities of publishing across all ORG portfolios to create an ORG-wide view of data priorities for marketing; and ensure its effective roll-out and implementation
• Act as a key stakeholder for Market Intelligence & Strategic Analysis on research data, capturing ORG needs and ensuring information, analysis and data is available
• Provide expert knowledge for open data and research data services within the marketing team
• Utilise content already available within Springer Nature to promote research data management and OD
Skills, Experience, Qualifications:
• University degree, preferable in science or business / marketing or a similar qualification
• Excellent analytical skills, experience of campaign monitoring, analysis, and reporting, able to set measurable and achievable targets
• Strong experience of taking a data-driven approach to marketing priorities and plans
• A proven track record of managing a marketing budget
• Proven track record and experience of academic, author and OA marketing
• Experienced in staff management
• Experience in working and building relationships with external partners
• Ability to craft integrated marketing strategies across all channels and touch points – online and offline
• Proven experience of developing creative and innovative marketing strategies and implementing successful results-orientated campaigns
• Creative thinker with excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills (including copywriting and proofreading)
• Ability to juggle multiple projects at once and adapt to changing situations quickly and effectively
Desirable:
• Proven track record and experience of academic, author and Open Access (OA) marketing, or of working in the publishing industry or allied field
• Understanding of data visualisation approaches, techniques and tools
• Understanding of working within the publishing industry or allied field
• Demonstrable passion for science or research
