Position summary: The Ten Speed Press design department seeks a creative book designer to join its 10-person in-house team. Ten Speed press, and its imprints, Watson Guptill and Lorena Jones Books, is a leading publisher of food and drink, art and design, business, lifestyle, and self-help books.
Designer works closely with creative director, editorial department, and renowned authors to conceive of illustrated book design concepts.
Responsibilities and duties:
Performs most or all of the following functions:
• Collaborate with Creative Director, editorial team, and authors to create one-off creative book designs, from concept to print-ready files, within established budget and guidelines.
• Follow design and creative direction with authors
• Create mood boards for design, photography, and illustration.
• Have creative ideas and be able to share and articulate your vision.
• Maintain schedules and meet deadlines on assigned projects.
• Maintain high color and production standards
• Commission work to freelance designers, photographers, and illustrators when needed and monitor progress.
Essential Abilities or Functions:
• Graphic design skills and computer/technical knowledge for book production
• A passion and eye for good typography and trends in design
• Thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite CC: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge, Acrobat Distiller, and Acrobat Pro.
• Working knowledge of MS Office programs: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Strong knowledge of typefaces and typography, full-color printing processes, RGB/CMYK color spaces, and image formats, and facility with color correction of digital photography
• Ability to think creatively and be an effective problem solver, while staying in budget and on schedule
• Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and coordinate workload under pressure and meet deadlines
• Good communication skills
• Must be a team player and have the ability to work independently, but know when to ask for help
Experience and education:
• 4 year college degree/BFA/art technical school preferred (or equivalent work experience)
• 1-3 years experience, preferably in print design
