The Senior Designer is responsible for creating original book packaging for a wide variety or hard cover and paperback fiction for both middle grade and young adult titles. This person should be creative and resourceful and have a working knowledge of publishing trends and branding. This position will work closely with editorial groups as well as design.
The Senior Designer:
1. Conceptualizes and designs original book packaging for middle grade and young adult fiction for hard cover and paperback imprints.
2. Works directly with photographers and illustrators and freelancers.
3. Meets with the editorial and marketing group with some supervision.
4. Maintains a strong working knowledge of middle grade and young adult market.
5. Designs interiors of books from manuscript to bound book.
6. Trains and provides feedback to department interns and Design Assistant.
Please apply if you meet the following minimum requirements:
• 4-year college degree in graphic design or illustration or equivalent work experience
• Minimum of 4 years of prior book design experience
• Interest in children’s book publishing
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills
• Knowledge of color and typography
• Prior experience working with the various stages of book production, from initial design to bound book
