Responsibilities
The Assistant News Director ensures overall execution of news mission and assumes top leadership role in the absence of the VP News. The position implements the strategic mission and tactical operations of the newsroom while ensuring that the highest levels of journalistic, legal, TV production and promotion standards are maintained. Overall, the Assistant News Director oversees all aspects of the news coverage and execution for all shows/website/multi-platforms. The Assistant News Director works with EPs, managing editor, reporters and anchors to investigate and produce compelling news stories and unique content... The Assistant News Director meets daily with core content managers to review resources, content and coverage plans to ensure that daily goals are met. The Assistant News Director also ensures production resources and expectations are clearly defined and met. The Assistant News Director will assist News Director in developing big story coverage guidelines, hurricane coverage, Olympic, political etc. day-to-day coverage, big story, breaking news and special report planning with an eye towards promotion, marketing and demographic development. Will oversee and manage the EP, Consumer and Investigative reporting unit.
Qualifications/Requirements
• A minimum of 3 years experience in a small/medium market as a news director, Investigative EP or as a news manager (Managing Editor, Executive Producer or Assistant News Director); or in a major market managing a large, complex news operation in a highly competitive and culturally diverse television market.
• Undergraduate degree, or equivalent
• Work overtime and on weekends with short notice
• Must be willing to work at the station in Miramar location
• Must be 18 years or older
• Must be covered by Solutions, NBCU’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Program
Desired Characteristics
• BA or BS in Journalism, Communications or Political Science preferred.
• Experience with consumer and investigative reporting and producing
• Thorough understanding of diversity-related issues and its sensitivity in directly reporting and gathering news content.
• Able to handle working under the pressure of intense deadlines.
• Possess the ability to work effectively with others in a team environment.
