Currently CQ Roll Call is seeking a an energetic and skilled editor to be part of its CQ Now news team, editing stories and managing the flow of news to platforms including the CQ website, House Action Reports legislative summaries, and others. The ideal candidate will be highly organized and offer a deep knowledge of federal policymaking and the legislative process. Strong collaboration is a must, as the candidate would work daily with CQ’s team of reporters. The candidate must be willing to adapt to work demands that follow Congress’ legislative schedule, which sometimes requires late night or weekend hours.
The candidate will have demonstrated the energy and determination to provide the details of policy in an accurate, clear, fast and smart way on multiple platforms beyond print, sometimes including blogs, webinars or podcasts. Applicants should have at least three years experience at major publication, a commitment to strong, watchdog coverage of policy making in Washington, and the ability to convey complicated policy information in a clear and lively manner.
Accountabilities:
In the role you would be expected to:
• Track and edit coverage of news including spot reports, features, graphics and other formats
• Foster an atmosphere of collaboration and a desire to win against tough competition
• Collaborate with other editors on news coverage, policy analysis and copy flow
• Ensure that CQ's news report has sharp writing and attention-grabbing headlines and visuals
• Coordinate with the CQ News Director and other CQ departments as needed to promote coverage, including use of social media
• Suggest ways to promote and showcase CQRC editorial talent
• Ensure that the team is on top of breaking news and help ensure that the team is attuned to user needs
Experience, skills and professional attributes:
To succeed in the role you must have:
• Ability to understand and explain policy news in an accurate, clear, fast and smart manner
• Experience working with multiple platforms beyond print, including blogs, webinars and podcasts
• A minimum of two years experience at major print publication
• A commitment to strong, watchdog coverage of policy making in Washington
• The ability to use social media to attract readers to CQ information
