Responsibilities
The Brand Development Group is seeking a Director, Product Design + Development to lead Softlines for Universal Consumer Products. This position will report to the Vice President, Creative and will contribute to the overall entertainment licensing objectives that drive worldwide brand awareness and deliver revenue to the studio.
The Consumer Products Team’s goal is to extend Universal’s film and television licensing titles through products that extend the film narrative to consumers through products that engage and delight. The Director, Softlines is a key position that leads and directs quality product development across multiple categories within Consumer Products.
Job Duties:
Direct the product team on all creative aspects of product development process from concept through the final product approval; Ensure quality product, trend-forward design and timely development across the following softlines categories: fashion, home, consumables and celebration/stationery
Oversee creative team of Product Development Managers and support staff
Possess cross-functional team leadership by collaborating with Category, Retail, Franchise Marketing, Global and Regional Licensees, Filmmakers and Vendors
Track and manage a budget specific to product development assets, trend/graphics and style guides
Oversee planning process from trend research to creative & product strategy, assortment planning, product design from concept through final product development approval
Possess a well-versed knowledge of home textiles/décor and fashion; including manufacturing and printing processes, assortment planning, graphic and pattern development, branding and trim development
Seasonally, develop global trends across all consumer products categories that translate into commercially viable product ideas that best represent Universal animated and live action franchises
Lead team to provide clear and concise direction on trends, graphics, character model draw-overs and creative comments that guide licensee partners through PD process
Drive fast-fashion style guide development and partner with apparel licensees to deliver on-going product freshness to retail; ensure guides deliver on market trends relevant by consumer demo
Create and maintain a positive team environment and inspire enthusiasm
Analyze and share up team performance on a regular basis
Implement and share best practices across the business
Qualifications/Requirements
Requirements:
Bachelors or Associates Degree, preferably in product design, graphic design or related field
10+ years Fashion Design and Development experience required with 6-8 years minimum managerial experience
Experience with manufacturing of both soft and hard goods for fashion, home product categories; experience in branding and packaging for consumer goods
Demonstrated leadership skills; Highly organized, proactive – a self-starter
Participate in travel – both local and international
Mac proficient and advanced skills in Adobe Suite and Microsoft applications
