Job Introduction
We create amazing digital experiences for the children of Britain. From Topsy and Tim to Danger Mouse, from Newsround to Blue Peter, we work with globally loved brands to deliver websites and apps that inform, educate, entertain and inspire.
We’re a team of over 60 people based in Bridge House, MediaCityUK. Our agile teams are made up of software engineers, testers, user experience designers, design researchers, product owners, business analysts and project managers, all striving to create extraordinary experiences for our young audiences.

Role Responsibility
To give you a flavour for the type of work you will undertake, this role will include the following activities:
• Providing technical direction and line management to a team of engineers
• Coaching and mentoring your team and assisting with their professional development by carrying out performance reviews, annual appraisals and planning on the job learning
• Championing software quality; guiding your team in developing software that is maintainable, robust, resilient and performant
• Collaborating with Technical Architects, Engineering Managers and other D&E Technical Leads to ensure holistic and consistent technical solutions
• Identifying potential areas of risk and suggesting mitigating actions
• Liaising with the Product Owners, Business Analysts, User Experience and Test teams to ensure the specification, design and development of new features runs smoothly
• Identifying opportunities for reuse and sharing of software solutions with other BBC teams and the wider software development community
• Reviewing the work of other team members and providing assistance and feedback as directed
The Ideal Candidate
A successful candidate will be skilled in some of the following:
• Experience of supporting teams of multiple developers, and owning the delivery of specific features by that team
• Advanced ability to coach/guide/influence less experienced developers
• Game development in multidisciplinary teams, on medium or complex projects
• Developing tools to aid in game development, e.g. data compilers, editors and content management systems
• JavaScript including WebGL, Canvas and animation experience
• HTML5 and CSS (Sass)
• Pixi.js, Phaser or similar game frameworks.
• Testing tools and approaches, including Test Driven Development (TDD) and test frameworks such as Mocha and Jasmine
• Writing and maintaining large scale robust production software
• Experience of working in an Agile environment (Scrum, Kanban)
• Adopting a “can do” positive attitude, a willingness to learn and collaborating with colleagues and learn new skills
