Job Introduction
This is a key senior role, critical to the success of BBC Scotland.
Responsible for determining and directing the content production strategy to deliver outstanding content across TV, Radio, Online and on Social media which meets local, national and international needs.
Responsible for the creative leadership of public service production teams across Scotland, taking account of audience trends current and future consumption patterns and the need to shape teams to develop and produce content to meet audiences where they are.
Role Responsibility
To provide senior leadership for production teams across Sport, Gaelic, Entertainment & Events, Radio, Online Knowledge & Learning and the Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Lead the senior teams in building a working environment which maximises the efficient use and potential of creative staff and resources.
To plan, pitch and deliver outstanding content, monitoring and critically reviewing audience figures and editorial and production quality in programme making, making appropriate recommendations as necessary.
Provide creative leadership and overall direction to maximise the impact of content and programmes delivered to audiences.
Work closely with colleagues in Scotland and across the BBC to ensure BBC Scotlands output is developed and delivered in line with the overall content strategy and multi-platform goals.
Promote diversity in all BBC Scotland content, ensuring that all staff are aware of diversity issues and that this is integrated into every aspect of the programme making process.
Work closely with colleagues in other areas to ensure a fully joined up and strategic approach to content creation.
To build and develop close working relationships with internal teams across the BBC and external suppliers/partners in the industry, ensuring that contribution and perspective from all areas are taken into account.
To pioneer new formats and innovation in content creation, leading creative approaches in the development of ideas, encouraging risk taking, innovation and diversity and giving constructive feedback.
To be fully accountable for programme and production spend with the support of finance and business management colleagues.
As a key senior leader, to provide outstanding values based leadership to a wide range of teams across BBC Scotland.
The Ideal Candidate
Leading industry figure with extensive experience gained in a multi-platform environment and a track record for delivering exceptional content.
Substantial experience as a programme maker with a successful track record in one or more genres and platforms.
Knowledge of multiplatform content and of user experience of platforms across Television, Radio, Online and Social.
A deep understanding of contemporary and historic Scotland, in all its diversity, and the ability to connect BBC Scotlands output to audience needs.
Significant understanding of current trends and issues within the broadcasting industry and awareness of output across the whole of the BBC, as well as that of competitors.
Experience and ability to develop and promote new on-screen talent in programmes.
An understanding of the need to leverage maximum value from rights ownership.
Proven track record in the management and development of a large team, including partners, freelances and/or independent companies.
Ability to recognise potential ideas and support others in developing and realising them.
Proven experience in managing a diverse team of programme-makers.
Imagination and drive to deliver on the increase in investment in Scotland.
Outstanding communication skills and ability to foster relationships with a wide range of internal and external contacts, with the skill to relay contentious decisions without impacting on key relationships to promote creative development.
Strong editorial judgement, coupled with the ability to devise and develop new ideas and stimulate creativity in others.
Strong evidence of commitment to creating diverse content and to the diversity strategy & policies.
Able to adopt a cross-media perspective with an aptitude to retain focus on long term objectives and retain a detailed grasp of day-to-day issues.
Considerable experience of long-term planning and managing people, teams and resources around complex schedules and budgets.
