We are seeking a talented, highly-motivated fellow to join our New York City analysis team focusing on wholesale power markets in the US for 6 months. You will join our power dispatch group, simulating regional grids to predict power prices, and to study the impacts of disruptive technologies like wind, solar and batteries. You naturally form original opinions, and you have an exceptional ability to communicate these to your audience. Your quantitative skills are strong, and you love to delve into complex subjects and build your own network in the industry. Teamwork is important to you, and you are excited by the prospect of working with colleagues and clients from a diverse range of backgrounds.
Our team:
You will be based in our New York office, working as part of our energy sector team at Bloomberg New Energy Finance - the world's leading independent provider of analysis, tools, data and research to decision makers leading change in the energy system. With the unique depth and breadth of our comprehensive BNEF platform, we help clients stay on top of developments across the energy spectrum.
We will trust you to:
• Publish research and analysis on US wholesale power markets;
• Run our power dispatch model (PLEXOS). This includes populating key inputs, calibrating with historical data, interpreting results and extracting insights;
• Communicate findings to clients and prospects, engaging with stakeholders across the energy sector.
We’ll need you to:
• Show real passion for working in the energy industry;
• Possess a deep understanding of US power markets and electricity economics;
• Employ excellent critical thinking and strong modelling skills;
• Communicate clearly in English: writing (for research reports) and speaking (for presentations);
• Act as a self-starter, have a high work-rate and have the ability to work on parallel tasks with attention to detail;
• Be quantitative-minded: be capable managing large datasets in MS Excel; have basic programming experience.
We would love you to have:
• Experience or knowledge of R, Matlab, Python or other coding languages
• Experience with fundamental power dispatch modelling (Plexos, Aurora, etc)
• A background in engineering, natural sciences, or economics
• Understand the factors that govern commodity prices (especially electricity prices)
At a minimum, we require that you:
• Are legally authorize to work full-time in the United States and will not require visa sponsorship in the future
• Can work full-time from August 2017 - February 2017
• Will receive your Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university between May 2017 and May 2018 and/or Master's degree
