JOB SUMMARY
The Design Engineer II will support Sales and Sales Engineering in the completion of the design request. Evaluates customer requirements for data, voice, and video; and validates scalable cost effective network solutions that meet the customers’ needs and adhere to corporate design guidelines. Works with Systems Engineers, Product Development, Corporate Engineering and Network Operations to design and maintain appropriate IP network architectures for commercial customers that will support Data, Voice and Video, compromise of IPv4, IPv6, MPLS, VPLS and adhere to the MEF standards for Carrier Ethernet. Creates the design for and approval of non-standard architectures, strategic network initiatives, early field trials and be the primary contact for Sales and Systems Engineers for reference and guidance on Engineering Design Documents and Implementation Guides.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES
Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance the customer experience.
Primarily focuses on design, supporting complex projects by planning new, expansion, or migration of the overall network to support Carrier and Commercial Services in accordance with design standards and best practices.
Produces detailed network designs and bill of materials from requirements gathered by Sales Engineers, RFPs, product requirements, engineering guidelines, and customer requests.
Provide support in planning space, power, HVAC, Fiber, and network equipment needs at various Telco facilities, carrier hotels, POPs, LSOs, and special customer locations.
Creates design of large complex customer solutions and if required, the Statement of Work associated to deliver the service.
Drafts any non-standard designs/solutions/proof-of-concept requests, identifies risk and reward, and works with engineering for approvals and assists in lab mock-ups if required.
Assists Sales in the approvals, designing, deployment and maintenance of customers whose solutions are in an Early Field Trial (EFT) status.
Works with vendors to provide standards based, reliable, scalable and cost effective equipment and architectures.
Uses design and inventory toolssuch as MS Visio, AutoCad, PowerPoint, Granite and other corporately approved tools.
Represents Spectrum engineering teams as a point of contact (POC) with other Engineering teams to develop engineering standards that meet and exceed customer expectations, market demands, are cost effective, and maintain network integrity.
Works and develops relationships with other organizations as it relates to planning, including space requirements, power requirements, equipment usage standards, design standards, and network topology standards.
Collaborates with Product Development to roadmap next-generation services, defining design requirements, capital costs, identifying and engaging supporting operational units.
Maintains expert level knowledge of industry and emerging technology trends within the telecommunications industry. and assist in the training of less senior department engineers on these technologies
Performs as lead engineer in supporting complex and advanced engineering projects when more than one engineer or engineering team is involved to ensure timely deliverables.
Work with Outside Plant and Construction teams to obtain accurate fiber quotes based on current and future customer needs.
Maintain and provide diagrams of Commercial networks in a consistent manor.
Mentors other engineering staff.
Performs other duties as requested.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Skills/Abilities and Knowledge
Ability to communicate orally and in writing in a clear and straightforward manner in English
Ability to prioritize, organize effectively and handle multiple projects and tasks
Ability to develop clear and concise spreadsheet costing models
Ability to effectively present and explain technical solutions to management
Knowledge of cable television products and services
Basic knowledge of Cable HFC systems
Advanced knowledge of the following technologies:
• Industry Best Standards & Practices (i.e. MEF, ANSI, IEEE, IETF)
• Proficient IP addressing and subnetting, IPv4 and IPv6
• Proficient with Routing protocols BGP and ISIS
• MEF Carrier Ethernet Services (EPL, EVPL, EP-LAN, EVP-LAN)
• L2VPNs/VPLS and L3VPNs/MPLS
• Ethernet OAM methodologies (CFM, Y.1731, 802.ag) and RFC 2544 testing
• Understanding of how physical layer technologies impacts design options and specifications (i.e. Fiber Optics, SONET, xWDM Technology, DOCSIS, RF/Wireless, xPON, etc.)
• Telephony IP architecture to deliver PRI and SIP services and telephone hierarchy DS0 – OC768
• Intermediate knowledge of computers and software applications, including MS Office Suite (Visio, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
Education
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field or equivalent experience
CCDP/NP or JNCIS, or another industry recognized comparable certification required
Required – valid state issued driver’s license
Related Work Experience Number Of Years
Network Engineering/ Administrator 5-7
Network Design/Architect experience designing IP Networks 3-5
to deliver Voice/Video/Data, including Optical Transport Technologies (ROADM & WDM)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Skills/Abilities and Knowledge
Knowledge of Alcatel Lucent (ALU) Service Routers, Juniper, Infinera, or other platforms
Working experience with Telcordia Granite inventory and circuit database is preferred but not required
Understanding of DC and AC power usage and planning

Related Work Experience
Direct experience with Cisco IOS and IOS XR on Cisco ME 3400, 3600, and ASR platforms
Experience with Transport Technologies (ROADM Platforms) from Infinera and Cisco
