Launched in March 2006, Hearst Digital Media runs the digital and social platforms for all of Hearst’s magazine brands and other sites. Hearst Digital Media oversees 21 websites (including the ones mentioned above) that cover fashion, beauty, home design, food, family, automotive, men’s and personal service.
The Director of Video Development will be instrumental in shaping the creative output of all video teams at Hearst, across both editorial and branded content. S/he will be involved in all aspects of concept, ideation and development, creative execution, and more.
The finalist candidate will be responsible for developing new video concepts for online, TV, and OTT platforms. The content will be diverse and include everything from social video, documentary, and breaking news coverage to profile pieces, lifestyle segments, scripted series, short web series, live productions and event coverage.
The right candidate is smart, cool, savvy, and creatively resourceful with a killer instinct for finding great talent, creating awesome content and telling interesting stories which audiences love.
By applying his/her understanding of content, editorial storytelling, audiences, and social platforms, the Director of Development will enable Hearst Digital to tap into the opportunity for high-quality storytelling institutions to become Internet-leading video creators.
The Director of Development will report to the Creative Director of Video.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include creating a development cycle that identifies great projects, collaborations, self-generating fresh ideas, maintaining a rolodex of creatives (writers, illustrators, animators, storytellers, etc.) and working with the Creative Director to develop next generation of hit series that meet the programing needs of the company and its various distribution channels.
Additional responsibilities include:
• Create concepts that translate Hearst’s editorial brands into both easily digestible short-form video content and longer-form video content that drives social growth and deep user engagement
• Create a steady pipeline of video that is created exclusively for and tailored to all major social platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, Vine, Snapchat, etc…
• Work closely with Sales team to build out a successful, high-growth branded video operation
• Implement creative strategy as defined by the Creative Director of Video
• Generate new shows and format concepts while working collaboratively within the HEARST ecosystem (work with HEARST writers, editors, producers, sales and marketing teams)
• Actively identify, pursue and build relationships with key players in the creative community (talent, writers, producers, agents, production companies, etc.)
• Identify marquee and emerging talent that HEARST should be working with
• Take pitch meetings, develop new opportunities, evaluate submissions, and provide notes on stories, videos and scripts
• Research and prepare creative materials: one sheets, pitch decks, show treatments, and sizzle reels
• Manage creative development slate producing weekly updates for internal and external meetings
• Stay abreast of the entertainment marketplace
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
• Proven success in video content development and production
• Prior experience within a content-based Media environment
• Established portfolio of recent relevant work with results
• A seemingly endless ability to generate concepts for videos and franchises
• Deep expertise in social media video distribution on all major platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, Vine, Snapchat, etc.
• Solid background in editorial direction
• Proven success in branded content strategy implementation across platforms and territories
• Strong understanding of digital media, both paid and unpaid, and the role that emerging content media plays in that space
• Ability to produce work that embodies the voices of different sites/brands
REQUIREMENTS:
• 3-5 years of production company or content development experience required
• Experience with unscripted shows of all genres and specific experience formatting concepts or ideating formatted shows.
• Must have excellent written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong knowledge of unscripted programming, pop-culture, and all other formats including digital and social trends.
• Must have a genuine interest in content development and ability to think flexibly (idea generation across multiple verticals)
• This person should be able to generate and execute ideas -- an interest in millennial female-driven content and a solid knowledge of both television and the online landscape is strongly preferred.
