Job Description:
The News Producer Trainee learns and applies essential facets of newscast production, writing, showcasing of stories, story selection and live control room operations. Training in the previously mention activities is provided for a short duration. The News Producer Trainee advances into news writing and research responsibilities. Within one to two months the Producer Trainee typically produces newscast cut-ins and portions of newscasts; produces complete newscasts thereafter.
Essential Job Functions:
50% - Produces newscasts; previews material before airing, writes, edits and researches show elements, prepares interview segments; coordinates breaking stories; selects graphic and pre-production elements; proof reads scripts; coordinates breaking news and executes show in the control room.
30% - Collaborates with producers, reporters, assignment desk and photographers to determine the content of broadcasts. Participates in story planning meetings.
15% - Times the show while on-air; meets all requirements of commercial content and off-times.
5% Assists the assignment desk in collection of stories.
Minimum Qualifications:
All must be met to be considered.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism or related field, or equivalent training and/or experience.
Experience:
One to two years related experience which may include internships or work study in broadcasting.
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must be comfortable with complex material including public affairs, economic, sports and science.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work a flexible work schedule and work as a member of a team.
Must possess good writing and graphics skills with ability to provide an interesting and substantive product.
Must be results oriented.
Ability to work in a creative, fast-paced environment.
