Sustainability Intern – Sony Pictures Entertainment, Summer 2017 Internship
Sustainability is responsible for tracking SPE’s carbon footprint and setting and reaching SPE sustainability goals. Current goals include carbon reduction targets, promoting sustainable business models i.e. digital, employee empowerment at work and at home, raising awareness externally to inspire action from over 500 million people and to enable productions to achieve an environmentally friendly status. To accomplish these goals Sustainability works closely with business units, facilities, productions, employees, supply chains, and more. Further, Sustainability works side-by-side with Environmental Affairs, which manages facility compliance and global management systems and under the larger umbrella of Corporate Safety, which includes production safety.
Responsibilities:
Please capture projects, day to day responsibilities, and what the intern will have an opportunity to learn in this role.
The intern will be responsible for assisting CSEA staff with our regular activities which typically involves working with motion picture TV and theatrical productions, studio operations, facilities and corporate departments. This person will support our various programs with a wide variety of tasks such as:
• promotion of our programs to employees (Greener World Group participation)
• verification of program effectiveness through data analysis (e.g. Production Sustainability benchmarking)
• Cost benefit analysis (e.g. biodiesel v diesel)
• Identifying best practices in cause marketing campaigns across various studios and businesses.
• Writing social media posts to promote external efforts
The intern will gain a broad exposure to the daily challenges facing the Sustainability and Environmental Affairs department. These issues require a logical mind that uses creativity in finding solutions for the productions and departments with which we interact. The intern will be taught to focus their diplomatic skills to help find solutions that meet SPE’s business needs while ensuring we remain compliant with the law and protect our employees. These activities might require reading scripts, visiting productions, auditing production and corporate facilities, analyzing data, reading permits, discussing regulatory issues, updating ISO14001 documents, and working with CSEA staff to ensure tasks have been completed. The intern will learn about our sustainability programs and assist in the development and implementation of these programs.
CSEA interns cover a lot of material in their 8 weeks. We may not get to all the things we set out to accomplish, but the 60-70% that is covered is exciting work that touches almost every part of SPE. This is an excellent opportunity which provides an overall view of SPE with a bent towards the safety and environmental side of the business.
The intern has a weekly 1-on-1 with the Sponsor. We review the work accomplished and strategize the upcoming week’s tasks and opportunities for new learning experiences. The intern will get the opportunity to work on projects that are of short and longer durations, thus maintaining interest in the position while actually being able to develop a sense of accomplishment by the end of the internship.
