Summary of Internship
The Development intern will learn day-to-day fundraising skills and will work closely with Development department staff to support donor cultivation, stewardship, and operations that enable the National Geographic Society’s work to explore and protect the planet.
Five Principal Learning Responsibilities
1. Expand knowledge of the field of fundraising. Gain meaningful skills including: relationship building, business writing, event support, data integrity, and donor relations. (20%)
2. Learn about effective donor stewardship and cultivation for large principal gifts and legacy donors by creating donor welcome packets and reviewing principal and legacy donor materials. (20%)
3. Understand the process of fundraising for nonprofit programs by carefully monitoring the progress of projects and explorers across the Society, learning how to communicate with donors, and deciding how best to present the information to prospective funders. (20%)
4. Learn about effective data collection, storage, and management. Help ensure Development database records are accurate. (20%)
5. Gain exposure to the planning process for National Geographic Society events and help with event support. (20%)
Related Field of Study Required
Undergraduate students/degree holders with an emphasis on fundraising, business, communications, or liberal arts
Knowledge and Skills Required
Candidates must be enthusiastic about changing the world, detail-oriented, and possess strong writing skills. He or she must be organized with the ability to multi-task under deadlines. Ideal candidates will have previous work experience and knowledge of office technology (Google Docs/Sheet, Microsoft Office, etc.) and preferably exposure to the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, etc.) and Raiser’s Edge and/or RE NXT. Candidates should have a strong interest in learning about the field of fundraising and a passion for the mission of National Geographic Society.
Eligibility
Candidate must be enrolled at an accredited College or University at the time of application.
