Job Description:
The Wall Street Journal seeks a Technical SEO Associate to join our growing newsroom audience team. The successful candidate will become a key member of the team, developing a deep understanding and execution of our audience strategy across technical SEO, video and app audience development.
The team is centrally located in the newsroom, where you will work with editors across the global organization to ensure audience acquisition, engagement and retention goals are met through constant monitoring of search visibility, search traffic, competitive search monitoring, and algorithm fluctuations. You will work to define standards of editorial and technical SEO within the newsroom and in collaboration with commercial partners.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Develop and own search growth strategy, train editors on effective use of SEO tactics.
• Work with newsroom to optimize all content for search engines and manages SEO campaigns
• Initiate and maintain relationships with numerous media outlets and their websites by both monitoring their content and making frequent contribution, links, etc
• Act as the SEO subject matter expert for topics including: on-page, SEO, technical SEO, accessibility and link building. Hands-on SEO-ing and formatting of stories when needed.
• Identify growth opportunities in core areas such as site infrastructure, keyword selection, or on-page factors optimization
• Identify and analyze competitor techniques, as well as benchmark website performance against competitors.
• Collaborate with commercial and cross-departmental partners to create requirements that achieve SEO goals.
• Work with audience development, editorial and marketing teams to drive SEO via content creation and social media.
• Work with the development team to ensure SEO best practices are properly implemented on newly developed code.
• Design experiments to test new strategies and opportunities for growth.
• Prepare periodic SEO audits to ensure ongoing adherence to SEO guidelines. Monitor SEO trends and stay up-to-date on best practices.
• Help build and improve internal SEO processes.
Skills and Qualifications
• Knowledge of web development technologies such as HTML, CSS, XML, and JavaScript
• Basic knowledge of data analytics tools preferred, including Omniture or Google Analytics
• Real-time analytics such as Parse.ly or Chartbeat
• Microsoft Office skills (Excel, including Report Builder, charting and analysis of large data sets; PowerPoint; Word, etc.)
• Skilled at providing qualitative and quantitative analysis
• Flexible and able to manage multiple assignments in a dynamic environment
• Strong time management skills
• Able to work independently and in a team oriented environment
Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree
• Editorial/journalism background preferred;
• 1+ years of hands-on experience in related field
