Our Team, Sun Engineering,is part of a thriving engineering community in Technology who design, develop and operate all of News UK's customer facing products and platforms. We are ushering in a new age of The Sun products, focusing on new technologies and platforms that will drive our strategic goals across The Sun eco-system, starting with the core website and including a portfolio of Sun products such as Dream Team, Sun Football and others.
You have a passion for software engineering and everything that goes into building great products. That includes the code, the people and processes that go into creating those fantastic products. You understand that through the use of engineering best practices and building self-organized, highly motivated and empowered teams, the best outcomes become realised.
Skills
We hope you have most of these skills but don’t expect you tick every box:
• HTML, CSS3 and CSS pre-processors and frameworks (e.g. Less, SASS)
• JavaScript and awareness of other flavours (e.g. TypeScript, Elm)
• JavaScript frameworks (Angular, Vue, etc.)
• JavaScript testing frameworks (e.g. Tape, Enzyme, Jasmine and/or Mocha)
• Code analysis and type checking tools for Javascript (e.g. Flow)
• React and Flux/Redux for building responsive user interfaces and SPAs
• Google Chrome’s Developer Tools for debugging and performance analysis
• Build and packaging tools (e.g. Grunt, Gulp or Webpack and Bower, NPM or Yarn)
• Version Control Systems (e.g. branching, pull requests) and tools (e.g. Git and/or GitHub)
• Modern web concepts (Service Workers, Responsive Web Design, Progressive Web Apps, HTTP / 2)
• Web pages rendering performance and optimisations
Any of the following areas is also an advantage:
• Continuous delivery and continuous deployment and associated tooling
• High-performant and scalable applications
• RESTful web services
• Application monitoring and logging tools (e.g. NewRelic, AppDynamics, Splunk, ELK)
• Linux
About You
We are looking for you to share our passion for building digital products and what can be achieved through innovative new technology. We are evangelists of agile and lean and, although we aren’t rigid in our approach, you should be comfortable working in a devops, kanban or scrum environment. You will work with a diverse group of people from editorial, marketing to those on the newsroom floor, so a combined curiosity for people and technology and how the two come together is important. You will be a natural problem solver, who is able to challenge the status quo. Work on ambitions and exciting products. Above all we’re optimistic about the future of News and know we will achieve great things, working with the best people in industry. You will be a great team player and able to develop and mentor others in both their technical and soft skills.
