Popular Mechanics is looking for an outgoing, collaborative, self-reliant art director with 5+ years of experience at a consumer magazine to help define its visual voice. Must have a distinct graphic style, the ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment, and the skills to lead by example. Strong conceptual and typography skills are a must, as is experience with complicated service packages. The ability to collaborate with the edit and photo team is crucial to this role. Our work environment is highly critical and ever-changing, so it is important that the candidate be very flexible. Should also be interested in video and motion projects; curiosity about science and technology is a plus. For consideration, must submit a resume in .pdf format with links to a portfolio of work.
Daily Responsibilities:
• Coming up with big visual ideas.
• Layout and design of features and some FOB pages.
• Collaborating with edit and photo dept.
• Art-directing shoots.
• Communicating technical information to illustrators.
• Communicating the vision of the design director to junior members of the team.
• Following through with retouching via the imaging specialists.
• Adding a distinct visual style to the overall look of the magazine.
