The Product Strategy Manager provides the competitive product direction for Pearson VUE's product offering evolution. Product Strategy Managers work within an assigned product and service area (ex. Channel and Delivery Models, Authoring and Delivery, Registration and Information, etc.). This position is responsible for developing product roadmaps for a specific product area to enhance the service offering, and to ‘sell’ the roadmap to the broader organization and external market.
The Product Strategy Manager performs activities required to understand market and product requirements, prepare product business plans, and provide sponsorship and support to product investment proposals within the organization. To accomplish these activities, the Product Strategy Manager works closely with external and internal business representatives. To understand the market and assess product direction externally, the Product Strategy Manager works with sales, marketing, external clients, prospects, and program management. Internally, to assess feasibility and fit against existing product and technology direction, the Product Strategy Manager works with Product Managers, enterprise architecture, and the software development team.
In this role, specific focus internally is placed on collaboration with Product Managers in the product area assigned to the Product Strategy Manager, to collaboratively identify and advocate for capabilities which are essential for competitive advantage in that product area. In concert with Product Managers this role will shape the direction for Pearson VUE’s Authoring and Delivery products - this product area is vital to develop, manage, deliver, and grow testing programs for over 450 credential owners and to drive innovation within the professional testing industry.
Define the Product Roadmap for a Product Area -
Summarize the market conditions affecting a product area to inform gaps or alignments to our current markets, inform investment and product positioning,
Maintain the Now-Next-Future roadmap for the product area,
With the Product Managers in a product area - implement a framework for evaluating client requests,
Track industry advancements that could benefit or be expected as a future capability in the product area.
Maintain Competitive Advantage in our Product Offering -
Conduct pipeline and win/loss analysis with Global Business Solutions and Business Development to evaluate prospect requirements for the product area,
Conduct competitive and SWOT analysis for the product area - identifying needs, assessing growth opportunities,
Create product strategies and position statements that describe our messaging, value proposition, ROI potential, and market potential,
Champion and lead the product organization in implementing competitive improvements.
Identify New Product Explorations -
Identify and execute product explorations using the Pearson Product Lifecycle - a Lean product framework,
Analyze adjacent markets (ex. Employment, Public Safety, Federal) for product capabilities necessary to succeed in those markets,
Participate in innovation projects as assigned. This can include working groups of the Product Strategy Manager’s own design, hackathons, and new product explorations.
Support Account Management and Business Deals -
Represent forward-looking opportunities for product service area in Quarterly Business Reviews with clients,
Consult with Business Development Management and clients regarding market needs and fit as well as to plan for investment,
Provide product area guidance to support client requests for new capabilities and partner with technologists and Product Managers to inform product/feature definitions.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree required (Advanced degree in Business, Marketing, Computer Science or Engineering preferred).
• 5-10 years product management or technology management experience required
• High-stakes testing industry experience preferred
• Experience in several of the following:
• Establishing and documenting business cases
• Market evaluation and opportunity analysis
• Product investment evaluation techniques such as defined in Pragmatic Marketing or Lean product management
• Development of new product offerings using Lean product development practices
