Manager, Tax Planning and Audits

The Manager, Tax Planning and Audits is an integral part of a 12 person tax department, within a company which operates in all 50 states. The Manager is responsible for coordinating and completing tax audit defense activities. The Manager will manage research for technical indirect tax issues associated with proposed and completed business transactions and will interface with business unit leaders to facilitate state tax support activities. He/She will be responsible for completing special projects associated with other tax issues. The position reports into the Director of Tax Planning and is based in McLean, Virginia.
Responsibilities:
• Coordinating and completing tax audit defense activities, including working with outside government auditors
• Dealing with tax aspects of transactions, including mergers/acquisitions
• Managing/completing state indirect tax research, and implementing necessary revisions to business processes due to law changes, administrative guidance issuances and case law decisions
• Providing assistance to business units on sales and use tax, gross receipts-tax, and other tax matters
• Answering state and local tax authority inquiries and requests for information
• Managing certain state tax reporting processes
• Completing special projects associated with other tax issues
• Some travel is needed, less than 10%
Requirements:
• B.S. in Accounting or similar degree. CPA certification preferred.
• Qualified candidates will have a minimum of 5-7 years of tax services experience in either a tax services firm or a corporate tax department, with specific experience in the areas of state tax research (including for non-income taxes), and state tax audit defense.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office software, including strong Excel skills.
• Experience in utilizing tax research software for multistate tax research, is required.
