We are seeking a Senior Manager/Associate Director of Publicity to work with our General Books division. In this role you will be responsible for the management, strategic vision, and direction of all publicity efforts related to books published by the Harper imprint.
Responsibilities:
• Identifies 5-6 key titles each season, determines budgets, and assigns resources to execute publicity/media campaigns and author events.
• Personally handles key authors/title campaigns each season to ensure success.
• Oversees the creation of press releases, pitch letters, promotional materials and arrangement of special events, conferences, etc.
• Develops and strengthens bookseller contacts and relationships with the marketplace/industry.
• Ensures strong relationships with existing authors and builds relationships with potential future authors.
• Develops and maintains close working relationships with members of the press (broadcast, radio, print, online, blogs, trades, etc.)
• Attends division meetings and events, and travels as part of author tours and conference participation.
• Manages and develops the staff within the publicity department.
• Liaises with key departments like marketing, sales, and editorial to ensure a cohesive message is being made throughout marketing/publicity initiatives.
• Publicizes books and authors; schedules interviews with broadcast and print media.
• Books local and national publicity in broadcast and print media as well as bookstore tours; schedules author travel.
• Briefs authors on how to handle interviews; develops media contacts; accompanies authors on interviews.
• Writes press releases; pitches letters and other promotional materials relating to tours.
• Coordinates all publicity activities on assigned titles from the mailing of galleys to the development of proper angles and pitches; schedules and plans bookstore appearances and special events; coordinates publicity updates for division and sales force.
• Coordinates outreach to authors, publicity plans, budgets and publicist work assignments.
• Shares supervision of junior level employee.
• Schedules author travel.
Qualifications:
• At least 5-6 years of hands on book publicity experience, with increasing levels of responsibility for campaign and people management
• Extensive media contacts with strong relationships within the marketplace
• Demonstrated experience working on literary fiction titles
• Ability to work under pressure, to meet tight deadlines with budgetary constraints and changing priorities (must be extremely flexible and versatile)
• Must be able to handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously
• Superb written, verbal and interpersonal skills are essential as is an ability to speak and think clearly and creatively and generate new ideas on a regular basis
