The Associated Press seeks a visual producer for a one-year assignment with a focus on health, science and the environment to be based out of its offices in New York, NY.
The Associated Press seeks a visual producer with a focus on health, science and the environment for our headquarters in New York. The visual producer will create visual journalism for digital use, working with a global team of news developers, designers, producers and editors to create compelling stories, including data visualizations, maps, rich multimedia packages and information graphics with a strong emphasis on mobile and social distribution. The visual producer will be an integral part of an all-formats health and science team producing unique content around a genetic science beat and science fact checks; he or she will work under the direction of visual editors producing news graphics and multimedia elements for all formats, with a strong emphasis on digital and mobile and social platforms.
This is an opportunity for a visual journalist with solid coding skills who is eager to bring health stories to life across all platforms.
The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in science and health, superior design and technical skills, expertise working as a front end developer and a track record of conceptualizing and implementing creative digital projects. The candidate must be able to work effectively with a team to handle projects from start to finish, which could range from long-term packages to breaking news. They should be experienced in visualizing information in compelling ways and write clean and efficient code. Other responsibilities include creating graphics and maps, templates, code libraries, widgets and data-driven storytelling. The ideal candidate is creative, innovative and agile, with a passion for the intersection of journalism, design and technology.

Must be available to work occasional overtime or on weekends due to unplanned breaking news events.
Requirements:
• Strong interest in science, health and the environment
• 3+ years UI/UX experiences in digital media
• 3+ years in news
• Proficiency in modern Web technologies (HTML, CSS, SASS, Javascript and JQuery, d3 and additional visualization libraries)
• Excellent knowledge of data tools such as spreadsheets and databases
• Familiarity working with APIs
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite
• Expertise in digital design theories including but not limited to typography, responsive web design and color theory
• Ability to execute creative plans, wireframes, navigation flows, and style guides.
• Strong research and reporting background
• Audio and video skills a plus
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Team player with excellent collaborative skills
• Ability to work on deadline and under pressure on multiple projects
• Degree or equivalent experience
