USA TODAY NETWORK is one of the top 20 digital companies in the country, sharing the list with Google, Facebook, and Amazon. And we have over 100 million unique visitors a month, which is more than Buzzfeed, Yahoo News, and Huffington Post. Because our team consists of over 110 local properties with USA TODAY at the helm, you’ll have the luxury of living in a community you love while making a national impact.
The Arizona Republic, part of the USA Today Network, seeks a watchdog reporter to
cover a large city in the metro Phoenix area. The reporter will be responsible for coverage that holds public officials accountable and helps readers make informed decisions about their community, from the spending of their tax dollars to the safety of their neighborhood. The watchdog reporter must consistently gain/build trust with sources and demonstrate a keen eye for important details found in local government agendas, budgets and other public records. The reporter instinctively seeks documentation and data yet
understands that the best stories are about people.
The reporter must think critically and creatively and write with clarity and impact
on complex issues. Priorities include breaking important news and developing
news content that engages our targeted key audiences. The position also calls
for creating storytelling on all platforms that accurately informs, entertains
and engages. The reporter will connect with the community through outreach
(social media, on camera, forums and community leadership), promote his or her
personal brand and the brands of colleagues, as well as the institutional
brand. The reporter will work collaboratively and effectively in a team
environment and always demonstrate an awareness of and adherence to the highest
journalistic ethical standards.
Because of the unpredictability of breaking news, the reporter must be flexible in
scheduling.
