CityLab is looking for a Designer to work on news graphics, identity design, and art production for digital and print. The ideal candidate’s experience is rooted in established design principles and champions best practices and industry standards. You will need a good sense for when to apply established patterns and styles, as well as when to evolve them. You should be able to identify and help maintain brand standards on both the digital and print sides. Most importantly, you will create beautiful (and informative) layouts that help our editorial team tell their stories.
What you will do:
• Work on the entire life cycle of news and brand art, including research, sketches, high fidelity comps, original illustrations, presentations, and brand ads in collaboration with journalists, editors, engineers, and sales & marketing leadership.
• Collaborate with product managers, developers, editors and other designers.
• Help us evolve and expand our design system.
• Design variations of existing art styles and new creative projects for continuous A/B tests and improvements on the brand.
• Balance the needs of editorial, the business, and the user.
• Work on both customer facing art as well as business collateral.
What we are looking for:
• 2-5 years experience designing web and print layouts. Experience specific to media or publishing is a plus.
• You enjoy both craft and deliberate, long-term systems thinking. You enjoy perfecting typography just as much as creating an original illustration.
• An understanding of layout, typography and visual hierarchy, coupled with user centered design and best practices.
• Experiencing designing and shipping mobile, web, and print designs.
• Software expertise with InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. A solid understanding of HTML and CSS. Experience with Sketch or InVision is a plus.
• Excellent communication and writing skills. You should be able to brainstorm with a group, articulate ideas, and tease out feedback from colleagues.
• Enthusiasm for journalism and a desire to contribute to the growth of our design culture.
To apply:
Candidates must apply with a link to an online portfolio that shows 5+ examples of finished design. Candidates without an online portfolio or suitable examples will not be considered.

Across Atlantic Media, generally, the firm looks for two “pillar gifts” in its candidates. In all of us, these are more aspirational than actual, but they are central in our intentions.
1. Force of Intellect - Atlantic Media seeks a discipline and rigor of thought as manifested, often, in exceptional academic performance and, later, success in a professional environment.
2. Spirit of Generosity - Equally, Atlantic Media seeks what we term a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition towards service and selfless conduct.
Atlantic Media is an EOE of Minorities/Women/Vets/Disability.
