Director, Original Series Publicity (UCAN)
We have some great original series coming to Netflix -- the second season of Aziz Ansari’s Master of None to stand-up comedy specials from Dave Chappelle and a lot in between. We are looking to fill a role on our publicity team for a director of original series. We are looking for a grown up, someone who enjoys strategizing andimplementing publicity and promotional campaigns that will focus on the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand markets (UCAN). This is a very hands on role, one where we want you to throw the playbook out the window, and push to innovate with us. If you live and breathe entertainment; entertainment that isn’t just made for one audience but shows that critics dig and others that fans hold as beloved as well, then we want to talk to you.
The Opportunity
Fueled by the broad appeal of being able to instantly enjoy unlimited movies and TV shows, Netflix has grown to have over 93 million streaming members in over 190 countries. This is a great opportunity to join a team that is spearheading and handling publicity campaigns for the largest Internet TV network in the world, in a leadership position, with a chance to work on series that feature high production value from the brightest filmmakers and actors around the world, using the latest technology.
The Role
The Director, Original Series Publicity (UCAN) will play a key role in strategizing, executing and managing publicity campaigns for series and comedy specials. They will also oversee and manage a team of publicists, working in the UCAN vertical. They are a member of a seasoned group of professionals based in the Beverly Hills office.
Think of this role as player/coach. The Director will help create, shape, execute and manage campaigns for series, making use of multiple global earned media channels, including broadcast, print and online. He/she will play a critical role in communicating with filmmakers, talent and production company partners during production up to and beyond launch. They will focus on creating cultural moments and high impact campaigns, explore new tactics of promoting series, and will be able to communicate different facets of their campaigns to executives, filmmakers, talent and talent representatives. She or he will pitch media, secure opportunities and cover set visits or help plan and work junkets. International experience or knowledge of international media is a bonus. She or he has also worked alongside agencies, or has managed agencies on projects. The Director will also help coordinate requests and initiatives from international territories and will help prioritize what is important and vital to accomplish. They can formulate and manage a budget, and give visibility into their process successfully. This person will also be involved in the awards campaign, strategy and submission process for their shows. Pack your bag because domestic and international travel is a requirement.
He/she will also have the opportunity to manage and coach a team of publicists working within the UCAN vertical, handling shows and projects in the same manner as mentioned above.
The ideal candidate is able to make wise decisions, even when faced with ambiguity and thinks strategically. He/she is not defined by past experiences and eager to put a new spin on what a series campaign can be. (This is real important to us and it should be very important to you!) They can articulate what they are - and are not - trying to do. He or she is a good listener and a real doer, and is able to multi-task and work at a clip pace. They are not afraid to get their hands dirty - and that could mean jumping in to handle tasks that range from writing a strategy, writing a series announcement, booking travel or negotiating hair and make-up. We are a small team, so the responsibility really is wide-ranging. They collaborate well with partners that range from content to marketing to social to product (engineers) and beyond. Strong candidates can handle a vast amount of work and they are eager to learn. They are curious and also contribute effectively outside of their specialty. A good fit in the role has a candid and direct communication style, they are willing to admit to mistakes quickly and questions values inconsistent with our values and Netflix culture. They understand that sometimes the job requires delivering bad news, and they’re tactful in handling such issues.
Qualifications
The successful candidate for Director, Original Series Publicity (UCAN) will have from at least 7-10 years of entertainment experience in an agency, studio, network or production company setting, where they have worked across the U.S. Experience in Australia, New Zealand and Canada is a plus. They have relationships with key media as well as the ability to build and maintain connections with key journalists and social media influencers. BA/BS required.
