DESCRIPTION:
The National Desk is a central hub in the newsroom. National Desk Assignment Editors are responsible for:
Gathering production elements for network news stories.
Scanning social media for breaking news and topical stories.
Pitching story ideas.
Coordinating coverage of stories with staff and monitoring their progress, which includes - updating crews in the field, insuring feeds are recorded and logged if needed, making travel arrangements, etc.
Gathering video, photos and other media.
Verifying information and fact checking stories. Working with CBS Rights and Clearances as well as Standards and Practices to deliver material that meets CBS criteria.
Providing producers and staff with accurate and timely information, especially in breaking news situations.
Scheduling crews to cover stories as needed.
Covering the Bulletin Center and producing Special Reports as needed.
Keeping track of Live-U’s and associated equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
5 years assignment editing experience in a professional newsroom preferred
Good writing skills
Must have solid news judgment and experience with breaking news
Must be a team player with a positive attitude and be available to work various schedules
Thrives in high-pressure and time-critical situations. Ability to multi-task is essential
Degree in broadcast journalism or related field preferred
Passion for news, journalism, and social media
