The Post-Crescent in Appleton, part of the award-winning USA TODAY-Wisconsin Network, is looking for a dynamic leader to oversee the newsroom, along with teams in Oshkosh and Fond du Lac. The news director will be responsible for a team of editors, reporters and photographers, aiming to provide a steady stream of high quality content while aggressively using data and analysis to drive decisions in covering the topics and issues most important to key audiences. The news director will coach reporters to make strategic decisions about coverage plans and will direct and champion investigative and First Amendment journalism. As a key link between the Post-Crescent and the community, the successful candidate will work to increase the visibility of the news organization in the city and state.
The news director works across departments and sites on content initiatives, ranging from new products to native advertising and content sponsorships. The successful candidate will effectively collaborate with the production team and design studio on a daily basis, set the editorial tone and plan content across sections and platforms.
We want someone who is capable of coaching journalists, building audience, using multimedia effectively and understanding how to use data to shape content. Excellent news judgment and editing skills also are a must. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in journalism and at least five years of experience in writing, editing and management roles. Qualified applicants must provide resume, cover letter and work samples.
The newsrooms that encompass the Wisconsin Network include The Post-Crescent, Appleton; The Reporter, Fond du Lac; Green Bay Press-Gazette; Herald Times Reporter, Manitowoc; Marshfield News Herald; Oshkosh Northwestern; The Sheboygan Press; Stevens Point Journal; Wausau Daily Herald and The Daily Tribune, Wisconsin Rapids. In addition, the news director will work closely with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on statewide coverage and Packers news.
