Nature Research is a flagship portfolio of journals, products and services including Nature and the Nature-branded journals, dedicated to serving the scientific community.
Key tasks:
• Selection of manuscripts within the broad area of Social Sciences for publication in the journal, with the appropriate editorial oversight and within the framework of its editorial policy, following procedures determined by the Chief Editor. Aim for quality and speed of decisions; and the right mix of tact and firmness in letters to authors
• Consult with members of the Nature Plants Social Sciences Advisory group to identify topics and research articles within the Social Sciences suitable for coverage in Nature Plants
• Perform the role of Associate Editor, Social Sciences for other Nature Research Journals for a proportion of time agreed with Chief Editors of Nature Plants and those journals
• In conjunction with the Appropriate Chief Editor, assess the activities of individual members of the Nature Plants Social Sciences Advisory group; maintain communication with this group; maintain an appropriate membership of this group by recruitment and retirement of individual members.
• Make those manuscripts selected for publication accessible to a wide readership, by giving attention to their titles and introductory sections, particularly the first paragraph, and by suggesting to the authors any structural changes that are needed.
• Ensure that manuscripts accepted for publication are transferred to Editorial production in an appropriate, complete state. Work with the Editorial production, Copy editing and Web production teams to ensure the smooth processing of manuscripts and other material, according to production deadlines; conduct final proof checks.
• Recommend appropriate selected manuscripts to the Appropriate Chief Editor for inclusion in News and Views, and in the journal press release. Write a one-paragraph summary for the press release.
• Suggest to the Appropriate Chief Editor topics for review-type articles, and commentaries; assess proposals from potential authors; commission, and then edit developmentally the completed manuscripts.
• Commission a number (to be agreed with the Appropriate Chief Editor) of News and Views articles (linked and/or unlinked) each month and edit the pieces to high standard of readability and accessibility.
• Write a number (to be agreed with the Appropriate Chief Editor) of Research Highlights each month, for the journal, based on papers published in the wider literature.
• Be responsible to the Appropriate Chief Editor, as required, for various agreed sections of the journal concerned with Social Science. This will usually involve commissioning, editing and writing articles, and involvement in the presentation of these sections.
• Suggest to the Appropriate Chief Editor appropriate topics for Editorials, and be prepared to write the piece if asked.
• Attend conferences and meetings and visit research institutions (in agreement with the Appropriate Chief Editor). Such activities will prompt a brief written report that will be circulated to the editorial team of the journal and also to editors of related journals, if deemed appropriate by the Appropriate Chief Editor.
• Advise Advertising, Marketing, Sponsorship and Site Licence departments as required, answering questions raised and offering suggestions/leads wherever possible.
• Devise and supply editorial content for special projects, such as supplements, as agreed with the Appropriate Chief Editor.
• Assist in covering the editorial responsibilities of colleagues in their absence.
• Such other tasks as the company may assign from time to time
Key relationships:
• Work with other members of the editorial, publishing, production, web production, copy editing and administrative staff to ensure the smooth running of the Nature Plants and other Nature Research journals as required.
• Work with Nature Plants Social Sciences Advisory group to ensure appropriate coverage of Social Science topics and research articles in Nature Plants
• Liaise with Social Sciences Editors with NRJ Centre of Excellence to ensure excellence in coverage of Social Science topics across the Nature Research journals.
• Advise Advertising, Marketing, Sponsorship and Site Licence departments as required.
• Establish, enhance and confirm the reputation of the journal and Nature Publishing Group in the Social Science community by fostering good relationships with individual researchers (while respecting confidentiality on editorial and commercial matters).
Qualifications:
A science, social science or economics graduate, usually with a PhD in related discipline
Skills/knowledge:
• A thorough understanding of the social science and/or economics research community and its needs
• Positive ability to develop long-term professional relationships with key members of the Social Science research community.
• In-depth knowledge of particular areas of the journals scope
• Strong interpersonal and influential communication skills, with effective presentation skills
• Strong written communication and editing skills
• Highly self-motivated, resourceful and achievement oriented
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Active, supportive team player
• Adaptability and flexibility - willing and able to travel to the US, Europe and Asia.
Experience:
• PhD level research experience.
• Editorial experience benificial but not required.
