Nature Research is a flagship portfolio of journals, products and services including Nature and the Nature-branded journals, dedicated to serving the scientific community.
We have a great opportunity for a science journalist with at least two years' experience to join the supplements team as an Associate Editor for the Nature Index. Working with the Senior Editor, you would produce Nature Index magazines and news content for natureindex.com. The Nature Index editors produce data driven journalism using the Nature Index database, which tracks author affiliation information from research articles published in high-quality science research journals. We are looking for an enthusiastic science journalist, who has a keen interest and understanding of the science enterprise, including trends in research assessment, funding and policy.
Key Tasks
• Work with Nature Index data analysts to identify data driven story ideas
• Produce daily posts on Natureindex.com by reporting and writing stories and by commissioning and editing stories from freelance writers
• Identify stories for supplements; write and /or assign those stories to be written by freelance journalists or subject matter experts
• Edit copy to tight, coherent and compelling narrative, identifying and fixing any problems with structure, tone or language
• Write compelling headlines, standfirsts
• Devise and execute novel ways to present content digitally
• Work with art team on images and graphics
• Post stories online, add hyperlinks, images, and graphics
• Promote stories through social media
• Monitor website and social media analytics, and make recommendations for tuning editorial content based on these results
• Work collegially with freelance writers, expert authors, art team and colleagues and be able to stand in for the Senior Editor for brief periods
Skills and Knowledge
• Experience reporting and editing in a science journalism role
• Knowledge of science and of the research enterprise
• High attention to detail and accuracy
• Experience using Excel and content management systems
• Experience in data journalism desirable
• Able to work with effectively with a wide range of people in multiple locations
• Adept at or open to social media
• Strong, demonstrated writing and editing background; a university degree in science preferred
