About Us
NBCUniversal is one of the world’s leading media and entertainment companies in the development, production, and marketing of entertainment, news, and information to a global audience. NBCUniversal owns and operates a valuable portfolio of news and entertainment television networks, a premier motion picture company, significant television production operations, a leading television stations group, and world-renowned theme parks. NBCUniversal’s policy is to provide equal employment opportunities to all applicants and employees without regard to race, color, religion, creed, gender, gender identity or expression, age, national origin or ancestry, citizenship, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, pregnancy, veteran status, membership in the uniformed services, genetic information, or any other basis protected by applicable law.
Responsibilities
NBC will soon launch a new digital-first team of reporters, filmmakers, animators, tinkerers, engagement producers and video journalists tasked with rethinking what video news features and documentaries could and should look like in 2017.
This yet to be named studio will be an independent, off-site division of NBC News tasked with experimenting with emerging technologies and visual storytelling. The group’s work will be found at the intersection of technology, shoe-leather reporting and avant-garde video storytelling — all aimed at mobiles, social and set-top boxes. And we’ll begin our journey by developing innovative video products in several areas, including creative news-based documentaries (domestic and international) and VR — all while taking advantage of creative treatments as well as NBC’s internal mountain of archive.
What does a mash-up of filmmakers, journalists, designers, programmers and a US media goliath that helped develop television look like? That’s what we’re coming together to figure out.
Job Duties
We’re seeking a producer/reporter with as much experience asking the questions and crafting scripts as they do bashing phones and setting up interviews, from countries both near and far. This person should have years of field experience. But he or she should also eat, sleep and breathe digital and social technologies and use them in every ounce of his or her reporting.
We are seeking reporters interested and hyper experienced in data journalism, social justice issues and foreign affairs. We are not looking for someone with a traditional news reporting background and certainly not one in television. Instead you should be willing to take or have already taken the industry’s idea of what a visual journalist is and smashed it to bits.
Rather we want a reporter fascinated by global events and able to chase a large headline down a rabbit hole and emerge with a fantastically visual angle with the data, research and an innovative plan to back it up. If field reporting is not your expertise, you need not apply. The ideal candidate will have experience in investigative and shoe-leather reporting.
This role will be responsible for helping to create doc-style videos, from news analysis to larger investigative features and potentially even half-hour docs. This person will be expected to create content that lives at the intersection of documentary, news analysis and social media experimentation. We not only expect a polished video product from you but a never-before-attempted treatment and social rollout plan for each piece. We will push you to continually reinvent yourself.
You should excel at scripting and writing tight copy, and though it won’t always be required, be capable of shooting and editing your own pieces. But we will be pairing you with another experienced journalist for most assignments, so collaboration is also key.
You should be able to approach your reporting in a fun and fresh manner but have the ability to pivot back to your traditional journalistic sensibilities as well.
Most importantly, we want you to be as ecstatic as we are about building a new product under the NBC name.
We are a team excited to experiment at every level of the creative and editorial process, from framing to engagement to the types of questions we ask. And you should come prepared to deliver new treatments for a digital audience.
