We have an opening for an experienced, hands-on, innovative, strategic Director, Technical Product Managementin our New York City, NY office.
Success in the MHE Digital Platforms Group (DPG) requires a strong commitment to teamwork and communication. Reporting to the VP of Technical Product Management, the Director, Technical Product Managementmust be a results oriented individual with a passion and capability for creating high-quality learning solutions, on-time, on-budget and on-quality. The Director, TPM must be able to promote teamwork and knowledge sharing. The Director, TPM must be able to work effectively across technicians, business leaders and educational designers and lead by influence. The Director, TPM will work to build strong bridges and trust between the DPG and the MHE International Business Units.
The Director, TPM must review the solutions holistically from the customer’s perspective. They work with their team partners, other TPMs, Business Product Managers, Marketing Managers, Engineering leads, Program Management and Global Technology Services (GTS) in the design, development and implementation of digital learning solutions. The Director, TPM is responsible for driving the successful delivery of the platform(s) in support of new products and new product versions. The Director, TPM is responsible for helping the teams to define, manage, and implement innovative digital products and product lines that are uniquely responsive to both market demands and the needs of students, instructors and higher education institutions in the International market.
The Director, TPM acts as the conscience of the product and the steward of the Agile teams. Through their leadership and collaborative skills the Director glues together the people, process and results that enable the DPG to be an employer of choice and a result oriented organization.
The successful candidate will have deep and broad experience leading teams, building software products, working in the education technology space and will have a love of transforming the state of teaching and learning through software. This leader will be approachable, trustworthy, inspiring and a person of positive action. They will be skilled at taking the unknown and turning it into well understood and prioritized epics and stories. They will be strong in formal and informal mentoring and have a deep respect for all of the disciplines and people on a given Agile team. Most importantly they must be deeply committed to helping teachers and students achieve improved results through the application of educational technology!
Critical functions:
• Be the conscience of the product, continuously looking at the product from the end-user’s perspective; driving the complete experience, software and content, to best outcome possible for the end-user. Ensure the customer experience is represented as a top priority throughout all stages of development.
• Own and drive the platform roadmap. Partner with the business product managers from the various business units to develop a vision, strategy and prioritized feature backlog for digital product(s)/platform. The Director, TPM must synthesize competing strategies and ensure cohesion across all product lines on their platform.
• Partner with Program Managers and Engineering Leadership to ensure a manageable scope that can be delivered on-time, on-budget, on-quality. Oversee the care and feeding of the platform, ensure all aspects of the platform receive attention, including technical debt and infrastructure as well as new features. Results of this work are communicated via the quarterly plan and documented in the MHE roadmap.
• Develop a shared vision for product(s) through investigation of market demands, user feedback, and competitive analysis. In partnership with the other TPMs and the business unit, gather and prioritize product and customer requirements.
• Ensure cross team dependencies are identified, understood by all affected teams, and then properly managed with a clear singular triad responsible for each one.
• Draft project charters, requirements, Agile epics and stories, with prioritized features and specifications, while incorporating inputs from all stakeholders. Ensure release goals and commitments are understood by all affected teams.
• Track competitive and technological landscape, keeping abreast of new innovations and developments in the market space.
The successful candidate will have:
• Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred, or equivalent work experience.
• Five plus years of experience in leading Agile- based, software product development teams.
• Demonstrated success defining and launching complex products, preferably with SaaS.
• Demonstrated success at creating and delivering products for non-US markets.
• Demonstrated ability to lead user driven design processes with a strong focus on user experience.
• Proven success at influencing and collaborating across teams of technologists, designers and client-facing staff.
• Knowledge of instructional design, experience in scalable production of digital content.
• Strong writing, oral presentation and project management skills.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, think-on-your-feet business environment.
• Demonstrated ability to enter new situation and effect change.
• Ability to lead and manage simultaneous projects.
• Deadline-conscious, results-driven, and high-performing in a high-intensity environment.
• Willingness to travel up to 40%.
The successful candidate may have:
• Agile Scrum certified.
