Nature, the world’s most authoritative science journal, has a rare opening for an exceptionally talented editor of enterprising, long form journalism to join its team.
You will work as part of the outstanding, collaborative team of science reporters and editors that produces Nature’s thought-leading, award-winning journalism. You will generate a stream of original, compelling ideas for enterprising, analytical news and feature stories for Nature’s print and digital platforms.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience in generating fresh, impactful stories through either data or investigative journalism or through other forms of enterprise journalism, bringing to the team ideas and skills that would strengthen and expand our journalistic output. Expertise in covering biological sciences would be advantageous, but not essential if your other skills compensate.
You will have particular responsibility for in-depth news and feature stories, and be adept at commissioning and editing a range of original story types. You will edit copy to extremely high standards and tight deadlines; develop a roster of outstanding freelance writers to work with; collaborate with our art and multimedia teams to produce beautiful graphics and multimedia content for all platforms; and have the opportunity to report and write your own original stories. You will have a clear understanding of, and ambition for, digital-first publishing.
We seek an individual with substantial experience in science journalism, including editing. This position is based in our offices in London or Washington D.C.
Responsibilities
• Plan, develop, edit and publish outstanding journalistic content for Nature in digital and print media, focusing on in-depth and long-form stories, but including news and other content as necessary;
• Generate and identify original ideas for enterprising, analytical stories for Nature, including investigations and data-driven stories, and commission those articles.
• Maintain broad knowledge of big issues in science, science policy, the scientific community and world current affairs;
• Work with sub-editing, art and production teams to ensure timely delivery of content; help establish efficient workflows for digital and print journalistic content;
• Work with Nature‘s art team on images and graphics: write coherent briefs, and work on image selection and development of outstanding, informative graphics and interactives on digital and print platforms;
• Work with multimedia teams to support development of content;
• Work collegially, diplomatically and effectively with the Chief Magazine Editor, staff writers, art team, copy/sub editors as well as editors in other departments / publications within the company;
• Develop a pool of trusted, talented freelancer writers;
• Edit copy to make it tight, coherent and compelling, working to deadline;
• Write compelling headlines, captions and other accompanying text;
• Report and write accurate, compelling, top-quality news, features, editorials and other journalistic content to agreed targets;
• Liaise with senior editors including Nature’s Chief Opinion Editor, Chief Careers Editor, leaders of Nature’s research sections and other team members to help joined up planning and content generation across Nature, and response to world-events;
• Contribute actively to team discussions, idea-generation and development of editorial strategy;
• Champion and support digital-first publishing; support development of digital-first workflows and thinking;
• Work with colleagues and analytic tools to track reader responses, log impact, and tune content as needed;
• Help develop novel ways to present content, particularly on digital platforms;
• Work with all necessary tools to edit, post and publish stories;
• Work with the social media editor and other colleagues to effectively promote stories;
• Lead special issues or content packages on selected themes;
• As necessary, contribute to development, implementation and enforcement of relevant editorial policies and procedures including those around journalistic ethics;
• Help liaise with legal team and editors to handle articles with legal sensitivities;
• Contribute to broader editorial strategy discussions across the magazine and company, as necessary.
Experience, skills and qualifications
Essential
• Substantial experience in journalism and editing,focused on science;
• Command of journalism practice, including reporting, writing and editing for various media; ability to continually generate and identify news and features stories of interest to Nature’s readers;
• Excellent time management and organization; abilty to work to strict short and long term schedules and tight, relentless deadlines; ability to react quickly to breaking news;
• Enthusiasm for, and basic fluency in, an array of science topics and fields; knowledge of enterprise journalism techniques such as data journalism;
• Good interpersonal skills and ease working with staff and freelance colleagues;
• Flexibility to adapt to new production processes and tools;
• University degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent professional experience.
Desirable
• Newsroom experience, preferably in a fast-paced environment;
• In depth knowledge of biological sciences and research landscape including genetics, molecular and cellular and developmental biology, immunology, neuroscience, microbiology, biotechnology, clinical medicine;
• Command and comfort with journalistic values and best practices including libel law;
• Experience in digital publishing environment;
• Good understanding of the international research, science policy and funding landscape;
• Understanding of the interests and concerns of Nature’s audience of working research scientists.
• Experience with social media platforms to promote and enhance content;
• Experience in investigative journalism or data journalism.
