I. Job Summary
| Major goals and objectives.
Research and set up news story assignments. Monitor scanners, phones and television broadcasts for breaking news stories. Answer news assignment desk phone and notate viewer comments or forward call to appropriate news employee. Work performed is for all media platforms and initiatives, including for example: on-air, web, digital and social media.

Assess importance of breaking news and present to Assignment Supervisor or Executive Producer for possible cut-in or priority assessment. Assign reporters and photographers to cover events/stories that are determined to be of interest, in a timely manner. Coordinate interaction with field crews and station. Maintain files of news events pending and can be scheduled in advance. Develop and cultivate local and area news sources.

III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements| All must be met to be considered.
Education:
Completion of High School, or equivalent. College degree in broadcasting or related field preferred.
Experience:
Two to three years’ experience working on a news assignment desk or equivalent work experience.
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong customer service/phone etiquette.
Must be familiar with live shot (both microwave and satellite) technology.
Able to develop news stories from wires, police scanners and reporter ideas.
Able to work well under pressure with tight deadlines and pressure; ability to work well as a team, as well as independently.
Strong writing abilities with excellent grammatical skills.
Basic journalistic skills and editorial judgment for writing script
