In January of 2016, Netflix announced a groundbreaking expansion of its streaming service into 130 new countries. Now, with a global service and growing catalog of content in 190 countries, we are revolutionizing the entertainment industry more so than ever before. We need a talented and experienced researcher to drive focused studies of our newer markets, unlocking further growth in our member base and love for our titles.
As a Senior Research Scientist on the Science & Algorithms team you will develop advanced statistical models, design experiments, and do in-depth analyses of internal and external data to answer questions such as:
• What factors influence market growth? We are interested in all factors holistically - those that we can control and those we cannot, micro and macro, endogenous and exogenous.
• Thinking globally, how do our many markets cluster together and based on what characteristics?
• Can we use historical data to better predict growth trajectories in our various markets?
• Based on findings around these “growth factors”, which practical strategies or tactics should we prioritize?
• What is the best way to design experiments to test these growth factors?
Responsibilities:
• Partner closely with in-market business and finance leadership to frame research questions and devise practical strategies and tactics from results
• Lead the research and development of new experimentation methods and statistical techniques that could sharpen or speed up decision-making
• Identify exogenous variation to build suitable structural and/or reduced-form models to provide rigorous insights
• Present your research and insights to all levels of the company, clearly and concisely. Transition easily between deeply technical conversations with your peers and recommendations-focused discussions with your business partners, including top leadership
• Work with data engineering partners to acquire the necessary data from internal Netflix data sources and other external partners (government, public, and private data sources)
• Proactively engage with external academic research focused on both markets and methodologies. Attend relevant conferences, seminars, etc. and form high-impact partnerships.
Qualifications:
• PhD or MS degree in Economics, Statistics, Quantitative Marketing or other quantitative social science (likely with a background in industrial organization, forecasting, structural econometrics, or labor, development, financial or public economics)
• Experience and expertise in European or Asian markets a plus
• Ability to work independently and drive your own projects
• 3+ years relevant experience with a proven track record of leveraging data and advanced statistical methodologies to drive significant business impact.
• Strong statistical knowledge and intuition
• Ability to build a robust predictive model from a very large data set and leverage for insights
• Strong SQL skills
• Experience with distributed databases and query languages like Hive is a plus
• Proficiency with a statistical analysis tool such as R or Python
• Strong data visualizations skills to convey information and results clearly
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
• Impactful presentation skills in front of a large and diverse audience, including non-technical business leaders
• A fan of Netflix is a strong plus
