Job Introduction
We are seeking a High Risk Advisor, based in Kabul, to support the delivery of effective safety planning, advice, logistics and equipment support for Newsgathering operations in Afghanistan.
An integrated approach to the provision of safety and security advice enables the BBC to make and broadcast programmes as safely as possible. The High Risk team is responsible for ensuring the availability of safety and security advice and supporting its implementation.
BBC Safety is responsible for implementing professional support and advice, and for supporting the development, implementation and compliance of BBC policy and requirements. Within this, our High Risk Team provides advice to programme makers deploying to hostile or dangerous environments, undertaking high risk programme making activities such as covert investigations, and covering high risk events such as natural disasters.
Role Responsibility
As High Risk Advisor you will be working alongside Newsgathering and BBC managers, both in-country and London-based, supporting the delivery of effective safety planning, advice, logistics and equipment for all routine BBC Newsgathering and production activities in Kabul. In addition to routine threat analysis and effective dissemination of assessments to all staff, you will also provide safety and security briefings for all new arrivals to the Bureau.
Yours is a key role, providing specialist advice and enabling advice to BBC teams deploying into Afghanistan, supporting the newsgathering and production teams on the ground and through all stages from planning and development through to enabling delivery on the ground.
Managing and controlling the physical security of the Bureau, you will provide advice and support to management on routine procedures and protocols, along with supervision of locally contracted guards and security personnel. This will include the drafting of appropriate and timely risk assessment documentation for in-country staff and visiting teams, and maintaining a safety and security database and records on staff operating in-country.
Critically, you’ll forge strong working relationships with staff at all levels in-country and more widely within Newsgathering. This will be especially important when advising senior staff and supporting the day-to-day safety and security policy requirements against programme and operational practicalities.
The Ideal Candidate
Fluency in at least one Afghan language (ie Dari or Pashto) and English (both written and spoken) is essential for this role. Substantial experience of managing security and of operating in Afghanistan is also crucial.
Experience of providing security and safety advice for personnel and infrastructure against a spectrum of threats will be supported by your demonstrable understanding of international security issues, current affairs and a working knowledge of relevant Health and Safety legislation. You’ll also have experience of briefing policy requirements to staff, including senior management, concisely and effectively. In addition to possessing strong written and verbal communication skills, you’ll also be highly organised, with experience of responding to short notice assignments and working to tight deadlines Experience of supporting deployed staff in a dynamic, operationally focused environment would be advantageous.
