Head of Rights and Licensing

We are looking to recruit an experienced professional for the role of Head of Rights and Licensing. The main purpose of the position is managing rights licensing for journals, collective licensing for all Springer Nature content, selected 3rd party licensing arrangements, business analysis and strategic planning for all rights licensing activity.
Key tasks:
• Oversee Rights Strategy and Policy across Rights Business
◦ Analyze rights licensing data to understand the economics of licensing arrangements, direct future strategy and identify opportunities in to grow rights and licensing revenue.
◦ Work closely with key team members to set data analysis and reporting procedures in order to inform the above.
◦ Provide budgets and forecast information in accordance with requirements of company schedule.
◦ Build contacts and relationships with relevant trade organizations and industry experts attending relevant events as necessary.
◦ Work closely with Palgrave Higher Education to ensure that the Springer Nature rights team effectively supports their needs, and hold regular review meetings with the PHE Editorial Director.
• Overall responsibility for Journals and Collective licensing
◦ Ensure the policies, processes and systems for managing journals licensing and collective licensing are set up efficiently, and in a manner to maximize licensing opportunities, and grow revenue (where appropriate) for the business.
◦ Ensure that content is always re-used under appropriate license conditions and in line with the rights that we have acquired.
◦ Build and maintain close relationships with licensees and potential licensees.
◦ Undertake monthly analysis of journals licensing and collective licensing activity and revenue in order to provide key data for further analysis.
◦ Keep up to date with industry developments in book licensing, attending relevant events as necessary.

• Recruiting, leading and managing Journals licensing staff
Qualifications:
• Degree Calibre
• Good standard of Maths and English
• Additional qualifications/training in copyright, licensing or contracts would be advantageous
Skills/Experience:
• Thorough understanding of content licensing methods and terms and the academic publishing business
• Good knowledge of copyright and other relevant Intellectual Property law
• Analytical and comfortable with financial modelling and forecasting
• Ability to represent business externally
• Excellent communication and people management skills
• Strong negotiating skills
