The Associated Press seeks an aggressive reporter for a 12-week temporary position in its Montgomery, Ala., bureau. This reporter will be part of a team covering politics and government for state, national and international audiences. We are seeking a journalist who excels at investigative and accountability coverage, has a track record of aggressive and successful source-building, is adept at producing enterprise off the news, and can set the agenda by working sources and breaking news before other outlets.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have at least one year of professional daily news experience, a track record of excellence as a reporter and a commitment to approaching the assignment as a beat. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of state government and some experience covering legislative sessions. The candidate will have an ability to break news and produce spot and enterprise coverage across formats that explain how state government action affects people. The successful candidate must write accurately and quickly on deadline and in breaking news situations. He or she will have strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, including the ability to successfully juggle multiple priorities. The ideal candidate must be a self-starter, possess a high degree of self-motivation and the ability to communicate well with all levels of staff and management. The candidate must be able to work all shifts, including overnights and weekends.
