Director Content Protection
Sony Pictures Entertainment’s (“SPE’s”) Legal Department is seeking a technically savvy, strategic thinking anti-piracy / content protection professional to actively support and assist with managing SPE’s global content protection efforts and to assist with enforcing SPE’s copyrights worldwide. This position will play a vital role in SPE’s efforts to combat intellectual property theft and will support and enhance the current content protection efforts.
SPE’s Content Protection Group serves clients across SPE’s divisions, including: Motion picture and television production and acquisitions; theatrical, home entertainment, television marketing and distribution; and broadcast and digital networks. The environment is fast-paced and allows for opportunities to work on diverse subject matters. The ideal candidate will have a track record of being able to successfully and independently operate in similar environments while quickly being able to understand new concepts (particularly those of a technical nature).
At the direction for the Vice President, Content Protection, the Director will be responsible for the daily management and performance of the following tasks:
• Track and plan for release dates of SPE content
• Recommend and implement protection strategies for SPE content, including coordination with third party rights holders and digital distribution platforms where necessary
• Manage vendors and services that assist SPE’s content protection efforts
• Evaluate, recommend, and assist with new vendor engagements for content protection services
• Track and synthesize data to regularly evaluate SPE’s content protection efforts, audit vendor services, and generate reports to SPE divisions
• Lead business intelligence projects for the group and collaborate across divisions to support business intelligence initiatives around entertainment consumption and consumer strategies
• Respond to requests across SPE’s divisions to address infringing activity of SPE’s intellectual property, including conducting online takedowns, forwarding takedown requests to vendors, and monitoring Internet sites and search engines for infringement
• Use vendors, industry coalitions, media outlets, and other available research tools to remain current on new methods of digital media distribution and intellectual property infringement
• Supervise SPE’s Coordinator, Content Protection
Qualifications
• B.A. or B.S. degree from an accredited institution, MBA (or other relevant graduate level education) a plus
• 6+ years of direct anti-piracy / content protection experience with digital content and intellectual property matters or MBA and 4+ years of direct experience
• Experienced in both technical and non-technical project/operations management
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint); familiarity with SQL and Tableau is a plus
• Strong familiarity with digital content platforms, websites, applications (both legitimate and infringing), Internet research tools, and search technologies
• Familiarity with Internet architecture; comfortable with navigating basic website source code (i.e., HTML) a plus
• Proficiency with digital asset management and/or digital content distribution as it relates to protecting and enforcing copyrights (e.g., YouTube)
• Excellent organization skills with particular attention to detail
• Ability to interact professionally and on a regular basis with clients (including senior executives) across SPE’s divisions as well as with third parties
• Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to interact in a collaborative spirit
• Familiarity with theatre security technologies and protocols a plus
• Personnel management experience is a plus
