Context
Reporting to the Content Development Manager, the Content Development Editor will be responsible for developing new and existing print and digital learning content for a number of online and blended course development projects from handover to Operations through to delivery and implementation. In addition, the Content Development Editor will manage the development of print and digital learning materials for higher education customers, courses or qualifications across a range of channels and platforms. You will be commissioning SMEs and liaising with programme and module leads to ensure on time delivery of content to Production. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the ability to work with specialist academics and be confident in making editorial decisions. The post-holder will be working as part of a cross-functional team, liaising closely with Instruction Design, Production and Design functions within the Service Delivery team.
Key accountabilities:
Manage all projects assigned from a content development perspective, ensuring that all projects are delivered on time, to budget and to specification. Attend regular project team meetings as required and report back on schedule, risks and issues from a content development perspective. Regularly report on progress of all projects to Content Development Manager and other relevant stakeholders
Commission writers/SMEs: commission writers/SMEs to write raw content or update existing for projects assigned. Responsible for ensuring that writers/SMEs are appropriately briefed in accordance with scope of projects.
Content production: Responsible for managing typesetting, copy editing, and proof reading of content across multiple delivery platforms. Commission, brief and manage copy editors and proof readers as required. Create SOWs and contingent worker requests.
Editorial/content standards and processes: In conjunction with the Content Development Manager, the post-holder will be responsible for setting overall editorial processes, guidelines and standards within the content team (from content authoring and copy-editing to proofreading and QA). Responsible for ensuring that editorial quality standards are maintained across projects.
Content development: Support the Instructional Designer as appropriate in producing blueprint and storyboard templates. Input into wider content/design conversations as appropriate (liaising with cross-functional team).
Training and mentoring: Train and mentor new team members. Act as first point of contact for editorial queries, author management queries and minor schedule slips – manage issues/escalate to Content Development Manager as necessary. Organise and run editorial training as necessary.
Reporting: Oversee editorial progress of projects once in production and regularly report on progress to Content Development Manager and other relevant stakeholders.
Freelancers: Responsible for managing pool of editorial freelancers specifically selected for Course Design content development/review tasks. Source and vet new freelancers as necessary. Ensure quality and consistency across freelance provision. Support content developers/editors in commissioning/managing freelancers for individual projects.
Rights & Permissions: Responsibility for ensuring that author rights/contracts (fee or royalty) and all third party content is audited and cleared for re-use (including images and pictures). Work closely with the Core and Growth Rights and Permissions team to ensure that any updates to policies are communicated to the wider team. Create and maintain rights guidance document for external and internal use.
Documentation: create and share best practice/ detailed process documentation (with input from Content Development Manager).
Budget and invoice management: Code invoices and manage budget for all projects assigned. Report back to Content Development Manager regularly on budget performance. Support Content Development Manager in monitoring/managing budget performance.

Previous Experience
• Solid experience in an editorial/content development role within publishing is essential
• Strong knowledge of the publishing process
• Strong knowledge of copyright laws (rights & permissions process)
• Excellent copy editing (mark-up language) and proof reading skills with attention to detail
