Position Summary:
Discovery Creative London is the multi-award-winning in-house agency creating brand identities, on-air promotions, advertising, branded content and communications for consumer, trade and corporate use across a range of media - principally TV, print and digital – for Discovery’s UK portfolio of pay and free-to-air channel brands, including Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, Quest and Eurosport.
At the heart of the creative team is a busy, industry-leading design studio, producing and maintaining brand identities across all media; motion graphics for on-air promos; key art for multi-media campaigns; and video, print and digital assets for ATL campaigns, consumer, trade and internal comms. The range, complexity and volume of work going through the team has expanded exponentially over a number of years.
Reporting to the Senior Production Manager, the Studio Manager is a new role that reflects this growth, and is responsible for the smooth-running of the team, ensuring all projects are properly briefed, allocated, resourced, trafficked and delivered on time and on budget, and that progress is effectively monitored and communicated throughout. As such it combines strong organizational, technical and project management skills.
While the role is not a creative one, it is crucial that the Studio Manager demonstrates an understanding of the personnel, resources and time required to deliver the work.
The Studio Manager needs to combine excellent organizational and communication skills with technical knowledge and mature stakeholder management, and be able to motivate and direct the team’s activities.
Responsibilities:
PRODUCTION
• ensure all briefs are dispatched in the studio based on individual’s strengths, skills and capacity
• manage permanent and freelance design resource to effectively and efficiently meet the workload
• book freelance designers and manage paperwork/timesheets accordingly
• day to day budget control, invoices and payments
• create and maintain an optimal workflow structure and systems
• develop project briefs where appropriate
• compile and update studio schedules regularly
• Manage and report all design costs & budgets to campaign producers
• play a key production role in design-led shoots and collaborations with picture desk and external agencies
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
• chair weekly operational meetings & regular one-to-ones with Creative and Production heads
• review work schedules of the creative department, ensuring work is delivered on deadline
• keep all departments informed about project status
• robust project management of key design projects (eg. visual identity)
• hold regular reviews and de-briefs on key projects and processes, and feedback / action learnings accordingly
• build and maintain roster of best-in-class designers and agencies
• build and maintain strong relationship with picture desk
• optimise systems and processes for effective asset-sharing in DNI
TECHNICAL
• review and optimize storage systems, asset management and sharing protocols/procedures
• implement, maintain and improve workflow tools and systems
• ensure all brand assets (logos, styleguides, cross-media elements) are well maintained, up-to-date and clearly accessible
• responsible for reviewing, upgrading and maintaining design hardware and software, and other tools, systems processes as required
• update and maintain all design-related licences eg. Typeface / font licences, image & footage libraries, etc.
Requirements:
• 5-10 years experience in a design or digital agency as design producer and / or studio manager
• Broadcast TV environment desirable
• Outstanding admin, time-management, organisational and people-management skills
• Exceptional prioritization skills - ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously is essential
• Demonstrable experience in project managing and design workflow trafficking
• Detail-focused, expert in MS Office, Excel, Google Docs and project management software
• Thorough understanding of the creative process in general and design practice and workflows in particular.
• Ability to understand, interpret & re-present comms briefs as required
• An understanding of design software, processes and systems
• Thorough and up-to-date understanding / knowledge of digital formats
• Ability to keep calm and organized under pressure
• Logical thinker & clear communicator
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
• Knowledge and passion for DNUK brands and creative output
• Strong team player
• Strong stakeholder management skills
