The Editorial Assistant is responsible for a wide variety of tasks across the newsroom, from assisting various editors with the creation of multimedia content to providing great customer service to readers and managing the calendars and other listings for all publications. This person has a unique opportunity to take part in the work of different editorial departments, including reporting, photography and videography, web production and social media, and the design of pages and graphics.
Responsibilities:
• Compile and edit the calendars and other listings for all the company’s publications – to include the management of multiple email accounts and receipt of postal mail, development and maintenance of source relationships, responding to readers’ questions.
• Write briefs, including city news, organizations, people, schools, religion, entertainment, business and more.
• Receive, read, transcribe and respond to letters to the editor.
• Manage weekly copies as they are delivered, organize for newsroom, and distribute to appropriate editors.
• Track, organize, file and submit entries for various journalism contests.
• Work with the team on the planning and creation of special sections and other projects.
• Assist with the coordination of newsroom events.
• Regular opportunities to shadow senior newsroom staff, write stories and columns, shoot photos, produce videos, lay out publications, design graphics, update websites, maintain social media channels, and edit content.
Qualifications:
• An undergraduate degree in journalism; or equivalent experience.
• Typically a minimum of one year of experience at a newspaper; internship acceptable.
• Excellent communication, time-management, prioritization and problem-solving skills.
• Proven success working on projects in a collaborative environment.
• Eagerness to learn all working parts of a newsroom operation, including the newsroom computer system CCI NewsDesk.
• Educational focus and experience in at least one of the following areas of journalism:
◦ Writing and editing with a strong command of grammar and AP Style.
◦ Page and graphic design, including Creative Suite software.
◦ Website production, including content management systems, and social media management with knowledge of metrics.
◦ Video production, including editing software, with a repertoire of news and feature storytelling skills.
