CityLab is seeking an exceptional Editor to lead the evolution of our editorial vision and power the growth of our audience.
Cities are at the center of our globalizing world. They have become our engines of innovation, connection points for culture and the foundation for smart, sustainable growth powered by technology and big data. We see cities as a lens on who we are and where we are going. We focus on the intersection of ideas; where city policy meets urban lifestyle. Founded in 2011, CityLab is for a rising global class of engaged urbanists who are guiding the future of urban design, technology, work, transportation, livability and equity.
CityLab has the opportunity to become the information source for a global audience of not only ‘city builders,’ but a broader audience of people who care about and want to improve their urban communities. We are looking for an Editor who can help lead us into that opportunity.
Position in Brief:
The Editor will oversee a team of 15 editors and writers and work in collaboration with business teams to execute our strategic growth plans.
The Editor will be expected to craft and articulate a clear editorial vision that attracts new audiences who are searching for a source of opinion, commentary, and analysis on the future of cities and how we live in them. The role will apply an entrepreneurial sensibility and high journalistic standards to how our work is presented, packaged, and distributed. Finally, the role will work closely with the General Manager and business leadership to create an agile media property built for today’s opportunities and challenges.
Attributes for this Position:
• Excellence in writing and editing;
• Strong experience in leading editorial teams and articulating a clear editorial vision;
• Creativity, agility and energy in executing editorial programs that build loyalty and depth in an ever-shifting digital media environment;
• Can spot talent, build and manage a team, and operate independently;
• Understands how to work closely with business teams and maintain editorial firewalls and standards;
• The role does not require domain knowledge, but a demonstrated passion and knowledge for urban issues and life is a plus.
You Will Get Noticed If:
• Five plus years of editorial experience with noted recognition for journalism excellence;
• Have led or been a critical leader executing digital growth strategies and engaging a digital audience;
• Demonstrate a deep understanding of strategies and tactics for producing quality journalism that finds a defined readership online.
