The Associated Press is offering a paid 12-week summer internship at its European Business News desk based in London.
The AP Business News Intern will contribute to the AP’s cross-formats report focusing on a variety of consumer trends and company news. The intern will receive experience and training in text and video and will attend editorial meetings. The intern will be expected to keep up-to-date with news in the region, track down information, conduct interviews, monitor social media and cover breaking news, either by phone or by going to the scene.
The intern will assist in the writing and editing of text stories as well as in the production of video under tight deadlines and aggressively cultivate sources. The intern will research and set up video news and feature stories and join location shoots. The intern will also be expected to pitch multimedia enterprise story ideas and execute at least one during the internship.
Training in the various formats will include journalism ethics. The intern must become familiar with - and abide by - the AP’s statement of values and principles governing ethics.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be a fast thinker, show creativity and strong news judgment with a keen interest and/or experience in business news. Candidates should be strong storytellers who are able to recognize interesting news elements and suggest their own story ideas. They must also:
• Show proof of legal authorization to participate in a 12-week internship in the United Kingdom.
• Demonstrate proficiency speaking and writing in English.
• Have good general knowledge of national and international affairs.
• Have good writing skills and the ability to recognize grammatical and factual errors.
• Have a prior journalism internship or experience in media.
• Demonstrate knowledge of online and social media news venues.
• Be highly organized, attentive to detail and able to multi-task.
• Be a self-starter with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
Applicants must be:
• current full-time students within two years of earning an undergraduate degree (juniors and seniors) when applying for the internship or
• current full-time graduate students, or
• Students who graduate December 2016.
Submission materials:
• A 300-word autobiographical essay on this topic: “The Associated Press seeks to recruit and retain a workforce that embodies a wide range of talents, experiences, achievements and journalistic skills. Please describe the qualities and accomplishments you would bring to the company as an intern.”
• A resume and cover letter (please include your projected graduation date).
• Five to seven examples of your text work (links to an online site of your work are highly preferred).
• Three to five examples of your visual work -- video, photos, multimedia, interactive, etc. (links to an online site of your work are highly preferred).
• A reference letter from a prior internship or employer.
• All application materials should be uploaded simultaneously, including the reference letter.
