Game Designer
As the Game Designer, you will be responsible for developing game systems, controls and interfaces (as well as the other interactive elements of his/her project) in order to bring the vision of the Producer into a playable experience.
Type of Position: Permanent, full-time.
Responsibilities:
• Takes ownership of player character core mechanics, controls and character camera, makes a plan for how they should be used in game, and works closely with Programming, Animation, Modeling and Level Design departments to drive development towards the vision laid out by the Lead Designer;
• Create game systems that answer the needs of the Producer with regard to the targeted experience for the player, while observing the production directives of the game;
• Standardize, document and communicate the systems to the game team. Regularly update documentation regularly to offer a useful work reference to the whole team, at all time;
• Participate actively to the production of prototypes in order to adjust and validate systems prior to starting production. Assess the success of prototypes by measuring how objectives are met, using relevant quantitative and qualitative assessment techniques;
• Adjust the game systems to allow the player to elaborate valid strategies in phase with the experience sought (without having any dominant or useless ones);
• Define the skills of the player used with the game systems as well as any related obstacles;
• Describe typical game situations (skills vs. obstacles) and collaborate with the Level Designer to set the basic game elements and how they will be distributed throughout the game depending on the difficulty level, the need for variety and the optimal learning curve;
• Create a control scheme that is both comfortable and easily mastered, by applying the relevant ergonomic principles (accessibility and usability);
• Define the information needed by the player to make interesting choices and adapted to his/her situation in the game, interface or menus. Collaborate with Graphic, Audio, Programming and scripted event teams (and others) to ensure the optimal communication of this information;
• Participate to the development of tools required to implement and adjust game systems in collaboration with Programmers (direct access to systems variables and logics);
• Perform any other related tasks.
Training:
College diploma in video game level design and production or any other equivalent educational background.
Experience:
• Minimum of 5+ years’ game design experience;
• 3Cs experience on at least two successful AAA titles;
• Ideally have shipped multiple console/PC titles in some capacity.
Other Skills:
• An understanding of gameplay flow and scripting;
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills;
• Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines;
• Experience with Unreal Editor desired;
• Ability to translate game concepts into on-screen gameplay required;
• Art or engineering skills a definite plus.
