Overview and Responsibilities
The Director for the Viacom Music & Entertainment Mobile & Emerging Platforms is a hands-on team manager who will lead a group of developers to ensure optimization of code planning, development and delivery. The right candidate will have a very strong mobile and emerging engineering background and experience in both tech and media organizations. A key strength of the candidate will be a proven ability to mentor and motivate others around them and lead by example. This position will cover the portfolio of all Music and Entertainment brands (Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, Spike, Logo and BET) on mobile and emerging platforms (iOS, Apple TV, Android, Android TV, Amazon Fire, Roku and Xbox.)
Responsibilities
• Manage complex production issues and find creative solutions to conflicts and able to act in a consistently professional manner under pressure
• Leading a developer team in understanding the development, planning and optimization of all code written
• Responsible for technology frameworks both in development and deployment
• Monitoring and assessing the code written by team developers, mentoring and assisting in training more junior developers
• Work with supervisor to develop, set and maintain the coding standards of the Music & Entertainment Mobile Group and its related properties by writing and documenting core software code
• Manifesting a technology vision for the apps that not only fulfills the business requirements but develops new opportunities and long range enhancements
• Must be capable of managing peer-level developers and leading a developer team in understanding the development, planning and optimization of all code written
• Responsible for technology frameworks both in development and deployment
• Being dedicated to completing work for time-sensitive promotions and events and instilling an atmosphere of professionalism
• Work with supervisor and team to push development “boundaries” further by utilizing latest native mobile frameworks and technologies
• Collaborating on projects with other departments and technical teams to develop creative and efficient approaches to production with sensitivity to information architecture issues
• Under supervisor’s direction, make recommendations to client to improve product development or help client choose best possible paths of development as well as promoting theirs and Viacom’s technology visions
• Assist supervisor in managing and allocating the development resources of the technical production department and making recommendations for improving production procedures
• Working closely with client/brand leads and producers to ensure sites developed correctly translate and express business or brand logic and needs
• Assist in providing technical oversight with central teams and external vendors on emerging platform applications for Apple TV, Roku and XBox
• Facilitating and providing ongoing support and escalation paths for live events on mobile and emerging platforms
• Planning and delivering engineering roadmaps with architects and technical leads
• Hiring, onboarding, mentoring and training great engineers
• Coaching individual contributors on OKRs and performance
Basic Qualifications
• 3+ years of native iOS or Android development
• Prior management experience with proven success at leading a development team
• Experience working in mid to large size development teams
• Strong experience with dynamic generated content management systems integrated with native applications
• Proven track record in managing teams of engineers
• Very strong mobile and emerging engineering background and experience in both tech and media organizations
• Capable of analyzing complicated architectures and layouts and translating that analysis into efficient technical strategies
• Professional and expert knowledge of iOS SDK using Swift / Objective C or professional and/or expert knowledge of Android SDK using Java. The ideal candidate will be familiar with both.
• Extensive experience with Xcode 6.x, and 7.x and/or Android Studio. The ideal candidate will have worked with both.
• Experience creating and submitting apps in the iTunes connect and/or in the Google Play store. The ideal candidate will have done both.
• Experience working in a continuous integration development environment
• Ability to argue the pros and cons of Cloud Computing, Virtualization, MVC frameworks, Agile Development, The UNIX Way, MIT Open Source License, RESTful APIs
• Working knowledge of source control tools: SVN and GitHub
• Expert knowledge of dependency management tools
• Video streaming technologies such as HLS a plus
• Some knowledge of PHP, Javascript, GO, UNIX Shell scripting, MySQL, etc. a plus
Additional Qualifications
• Post-Secondary degree (BA, BSc) and or Graduate level (MA, MSc, MFA) or equivalent experience preferred
• Familiar with RxJava, Reactive Cocoa or the concept of Functional Reactive Programming
• Contribution to open source
• Some experience with video/image processing
• Some experience developing frameworks
• Demonstrated interest in media technology and the mobile and emerging space
• Demonstrated interest in machine learning and natural language processing
• Demonstrated interest in exploring data and creating visualizations
• Prior experience with adaptive video streaming technologies, digital advertising platforms, and/or web analytics integration is preferred
• Capable of working closely with and managing developers in SCRUM or Agile teams
• Commitment to getting results for time-sensitive launches, promotions and events
• Capable of understanding business objectives and be able to translate that business logic into technical design
• Able to work in a fast-paced team environment and be adaptable to the demands of all levels and types of production duties
• Willing to take smart technical risks
